My Nonprofit Reviews
Review for Friends of the Earth, Washington, DC, USA
As a result of the Friends of the Earth very effective campaign to save bees, I planted a large pollinator garden last year. This had many side effects in addition to hosting bees and butterflies. Another effect was that I became a dedicated gardener, and I must say that gardening is a very effective stress reducer and a wonderful way to exercise my 83 year old body. Weeding and planting and digging and lugging soil around and composting and shredding beat any exercise class I've ever been in. Yet another effect was noticing how climate change has had an effect on plants. In this, my second year of the garden, nearly every plant bloomed later than was expected, thus the pollinators had less time this summer to pollinate. I checked with a master gardener who said that the blooming season was indeed later than usual this year. Gardeners notice changes and this can be useful all around. I am grateful to Friends of the Earth for bringing attention to the plight of bees and all of their other good work at a time when we need it most.
