Review for North Texas Prostate Cancer Coalition, Colleyville, TX, USA
The most difficult decision for men newly diagnosed with prostate cancer is the choice of the next step. I was one of those men faced with that choice. Questions concerning what method of treatment, where should I go, what should I expect, what were my chances of survival, etc. occupied my mind. I was definitely ignorant about the cancer and worried about my future. And then I was fortunate enough to be referred by a friend and prostate cancer survivor to a support group, The North Texas Prostate Cancer Coalition.
This group was, and still is, the source of much needed unbiased information that comes from men who are survivors of prostate cancer and who are willing to share their experiences regarding this prevalent, but not widely, understood disease. The organization not only holds regular weekly sessions to discuss the disease in a quiet learning environment but maintains an internet presence that is informative and kept up to date through the dedicated efforts of its leadership. In addition to hosting seminars and events, volunteers from the organization set up booths to provide information and answer questions at other major and minor public events throughout North Texas. A monthly meeting of the group along with wives, and attended by knowledgeable medical personnel, provides additional expertise and opportunity to find answers to questions from different perspectives.
This support organization gave, and continue to give me hope in my times of uncertainty and despair. I can't say enough good things about the organization and what they do. They showed me how to proceed and accept what is now the New Normal for me - A Cancer Survivor.
