Review for Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide - ELAW, Eugene, OR, USA
As a professor of environmental law for 40 years, I have long been impressed by the dedication and creativity of ELAW. I helped found ELAW more than 25 years ago, with local public interest advocates in 9 countries as the co-founders.
Most notable about ELAW is the concern each staff member shows for support of empowerment of local advocates around the world. The staff is the most stable and caring of any organization I have ever known. And it shows in results. Public interest lawyers and scientists in their home countries are achieving remarkable victories -- all with the support of the ELAW staff.
ELAW is unique. Other environmental law organizations in the United States who try to work internationally do not have the unremitting focus on LOCAL empowerment that ELAW has. ELAW does not dominate; it facilitates. And in the process, environmental law advocates in more than 70 countries grow their expertise and experience. They are the ones who will be available to the citizens in their countries for decades to come. They never leave. ELAW helps them be great.
