Review for Lazarex Cancer Foundation, Danville, CA, USA
I am a volunteer with Lazarex, after having spent 45 years practicing law in the San Francisco Bay Area. I volunteer a couple of mornings per week, as well as assist in outreach and fundraising activities. I put off retirement from legal practice for several years because I feared that I would have a difficult time replacing the meaning and prestige that came from representing my clients. Given that work has been my hobby for the last 45 years, I was concerned about losing the intellectual stimulation and sense of purpose that had come from from work and association with other lawyers, judges, and clients.
After volunteering at Lazarex for several months I have found a new passion and meaning in my life. While I enjoyed practicing law for all of those years, the satisfaction that comes from helping patients who have been given a dire diagnosis that they are terminally ill with little chance of recovery, to once again find hope is far more rewarding than anything I experienced as a lawyer. When I have the opportunity to interact with patients they uniformly express their heart felt gratitude for what Lazarex is doing for them.
I consider it an honor to work with such a selfless organization, which is dedicated to helping the patients extend their lives, and in some cases even find a cure that allows them to return to living a full and meaningful life, free of the ravages of the disease. Moreover, it extremely gratifying to be involved in some small way in the effort to locate a cure for this dreaded disease. Lazarex's motto is that " a diagnosis of cancer isn't a death sentence" even to those who have failed the traditional treatments. It is privilege to be able to be involved in the work of Lazarex and to have the opportunity to work with some of the most generous and self-less people I have ever had the opportunity to meet.
