Review for Herban Health, East Palo Alto, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I have been a volunteer acupuncturist at Herban Health for almost 4 years and this experience has been both rewarding and humbling to me. Herban Health is a great organization where I am able to utilize my skills and knowledge as an acupuncturist/chinese medicine doctor to serve people with limited or no healthcare alternatives. Herban Health has been providing free acupuncture and health education classes to low income people, people who are homeless or in recovery in the East Palo Alto/Menlo Park area for many years. These services have been provided almost exclusively by volunteer practitioners, small money donations from clients, acupuncture supplies donated by vendors, and room space donated by various community based organizations. Only recently has Herban Health become an official non-profit organization. In my past life, I was a biomedical scientist by training and had worked with cutting edge research on Western medical therapies until I went back to school to become a Chinese medicine practitioner. Working with the volunteers and the clients at Herban Health has definitely changed my perspectives on and made me appreciate much more about public health and community work. I have been inspired by all the volunteers who have given their time and efforts; I have been inspired by what a difference Chinese medicine (including acupuncture, lifestyle and nutrition education) can make to the clients’ health; and most of all, I have been inspired by the clients who, despite the tremendous stress, hardships and serious health or addiction issues they are facing, still strive for a better and healthier life for themselves and their families. Even at this small scale, I believe that Herban Health has already touched many people. We hope to continue serving more people in need and to work with other practitioners and communities to set up similar holistic healthcare projects.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the positive feedback from our clients; the improvements in their health, reduction in stress and pain; and the ever increasing number of new clients seeking our services.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

nothing at this time

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

When clients return and show improvements in their health, I know that I have made a small difference in their lives.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

compassionate, caring, professional, and respectful of the clients.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

(1) expand its services to provide more clinics and education classes. (2) expand its outreach to other medical practitioners and community based organizations so that similar healthcare projects can be set up for other medically underserved communities.

Ways to make it better...

there are more practitioners and staff, I could spend more time with each client.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Funding and volunteer practitioners.
