Review for Days for Girls International , Mt. Vernon, WA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I have never come across an organization, nonprofit or for-profit, that has a better bang-for-the-buck in improving the world. For around $10 (and a few hours of service) I can create a kit that enables girls to reclaim 180 days of days they likely would have missed school, days they might have sat alone at home, days they might have felt ashamed simply for being female. I get to literally roll up my sleeves and take part in creating a beautiful set of menstrual pads that prevent leaks, camouflage stains, and help a girl to care for her menstrual hygiene in privacy and with dignity.

Volunteers go into urban and rural settings, visiting schools and clinics and orphanages, teaching girls (some of whom knew nothing about menstruation until it happened to them) about the menstrual cycle that is the reason every human being on this planet. We teach how pregnancy happens, and how HIV is transmitted. We teach self-care and self-defense. We teach that menstruation is not a curse, or a disease. And that any one of them could be the next Oprah Winfrey, their nation's next national treasure.

Days for Girls International cuts to the heart of issues that keep families in poverty. It frees girls and women to discover their potential. It facilitates the goals of other worthy projects like school-building and combating maternal mortality. It has captured my passion and I embrace its audacious goal of "Every girl. Everywhere. Period." by 2020. There are so many problems in the world that are difficult to solve. This is not one of them. At the rate DfG is going, I believe that within my lifetime, every girl will have reasonable access to sustainable menstrual hygiene options that are affordable, comfortable, and dependable. Let's do this!

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

enable them to hire more full-time staff, so they can keep up with all the requests for Kits and offers to help! It's a good thing that so many people are willing to join the effort when they become aware of the issue, and it's amazing what DfG has been able to accomplish relying on volunteers, but we could do even better with a reasonable amount of dedicated staff.
