Review for National School Climate Center, New York, NY, USA
I've written extensively about what makes for an impactful K-12 experience. From my first days of research, it quickly became apparent to me that great schools understand the importance of children's social and emotional development. The challenge for them, and for any school interested in vigorously taking on this aspect of school life, has been finding a program around which they can model their work.
NSCC's model gives them what they need for a fully-integrated effort that can deal with empowering students and building positive character traits, as well as addressing civic responsibility and anti-bullying efforts. Its genius is twofold: It is not a rigid program, but rather a flexible structure that schools can adapt to their individual circumstances, and it is systemic in its vision, recognizing that the only truly successful effort is one that organizes all aspects of school life, including professional development and the conduct of adults, around a consistent message and focus.
Social and emotional development issues cannot be ignored. NSCC is a great partner for structuring how to respond.
