Review for Math Science Network, Oakland, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

The Expanding Your Horizons network provides hands-on outreach to girls in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics by engaging members of the professional community. It's incredibly motivating for girls to have the opportunity to see first-hand the benefits of concerted academics in these areas, but it's even more rewarding as the adult reaching out to these girls. Instigating that spark of interest can often mean the difference between a girl throwing in the towel in the face of a difficult math class, versus giving it all she's got. It's one of the most directly effective organizations I've had the pleasure of working with.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

One of my best experiences was having a middle-school girl who thought she wanted to be a hairdresser (?!!) come up to me and express her newfound interest in computers. She hadn't previously realized how social computer engineering could be!

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

The Expanding Your Horizons network has been around for over 30 years and holds workshops at universities around the world. If I could change one thing, it would be to *increase awarness* of the opportunities provided by getting involved!

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

...the incredible reward that stems from having an impact on a young girl's future.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

...exciting, motivated, engaging STEM professionals from diverse backgrounds, all eager to show off the benefits of careers that are typically dominated by men.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

...provide resources for even more conferences around the world, increase awareness, and extend outreach to even more underprivileged girls.

Ways to make it better...

...there were even more opportunities to interact with girls closer to my location

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

...lack of funding to expand global outreach

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

About every month
