Review for Hughes Foundation, Minneapolis, MN, USA

Rating: 0 stars

I met Jerry many years ago and found a man who really understands what it takes to make a difference in the world (especially when things do not make sense), a new found energy, a desire to take the focus off myself and to work together with him so that I/we may help others in need. His passion and commitment is so strong that one can not help but be swept up by it. His story is one that really puts it all in proper perspective as well. It not only touches those who are infected, but allows those who are not, a better understanding of what it is all about, what it is like to deal with every day and so much more. The Hughes Foundation is an excellent tool that helps all this to come together. So, I joined as a board member to really put things in motion and boy, did we put things in motion!!! We were able to solidify many different camps for a variety of different individuals and their needs. Ones that normally would have been cast aside and forgotten. Most not knowing that others cared and could help. Those who were left out on the streets with no where to go, no hope, no sense of belonging and some that felt they had no reason to go on living. To save one life with giving them hope was a true testiment to one type of success. To be able to provide education on prevention, how to deal with it, giving them a place to go, belong are all other types of success. Yet, Jerry is only one man and needs a lot of assistance from volunteers, board members, sponsors, grants and individual donations. It is with these additional tools that the Hughes Foundation can continue to make differences all around the world and here too in the USA. One of the most common questions we received, was what can I do to help. The best response I could give, was please donate now so that the Hughes Foundation can continue to make a difference, open up other tools that it is trying to bring to life to help those in need.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I've seen the results of this organization first hand by being a board member. We have many testimonies of individuals who were ready to end their lives until they heard Jerry's voice, his message and how he deals with it on a daily basis.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I did run this organization for quite some time and think that they board they have now can do an even better job and accomplish much more. This is due to being established more, having a proven track record and being able to open many more doors.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

What I enjoyed most is the ability to get my focus off of myself and onto others. To be able to find a vehicle to help others, make a difference right now and directly. Where one typcially had to wonder how much was going to cause, here it is a HUGE %.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Nutritional experts, medical experts, Non-Profit organization running experts, marketing talent and a whole lot more.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Really make a difference!! The educational DVD to help those that we did not have the funds/time to go & visit, use as follow up training materials once we had. Plus more/diff. camps, schools, orpahanages, medical testing etc.

Ways to make it better...

The only thing I can say to make my experience better, was to be able to have raised more funds for more of the programs that we wanted to use. Everything takes time and we simply had to keep pushing some out till we could/can start them.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Money. As I have stated earlier, they have many great ideas for tools, but lack some critical funds. The private sector was the main focus, but now having some great marketing tools, I see the grants, corporate sponsorships to be a much mroe open areana

One thing I'd also say is that...

If you are looking for a great cause to put forth your time, energy and moneys, this is it!! You'll know that what you are putting it towards is directly benefitting those in need. So, give kindly.

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

About every month

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

2010

Role:  Board Member & I started as by offering some ideas for programs, then joined as a the Secretary, moved to the Chair and Fundraiser.
