Review for Haiti Projects Inc, Hanover, MA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I have been the Treasurer of Haiti Projects since 1996, and have known our founder, Sarah Hackett since that time. Here, in a nutshell, is what Haiti Projects has made possible for the women of Fond des Blancs and their families. 1. Discretionary income earned by the women's embroidery workers has supported family diet, education, and family planning 2. The follow on effect has changed their outlook on life and their opportunities. 3. The Family Planning Clinic offers them (and their husbands) contraceptive options and counselling. 4. The Library offers their pre-school children basic instruction, leading to the potential for schooling to follow. 5. Our educational funding projects provides the opportunity for further education. 6. Many of the women now take computer classes at the Library and through internet facility there they can gain information and access to the larger world. 7. A local credit union has recently set up a local branch for direct deposit of payroll. Within a matter of a few years, women in the village have gone from being largely illiterate and uninvolved in life beyond their immediate families, to income earners, bank account holders, internet surfers. It is an amazing transformation.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

my annual trips to Haiti, with my own eyes, and seen how the results have evolved over time. This is an organization that responds to basic needs, and beyond that, helps the people of one small region in Haiti become a part of the wider world.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the sense of achievement, getting to know people in Fond des Blancs, seeing a side of the world I would not have come to ordinarily, and seeing how small things can grow and make a difference.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Our General Director in Fond des Blancs is a remarkable person: a native of the village and educated in Port au Prince, he returned there after schooling to apply his energy to the improvement of life there.

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

About every week
