Review for Alameda County Foster Parent Association, Chapter 1, San Leandro, CA, USA
I have been on the ACFPA Board as Treasurer for close to 5 years and have been grateful to have the opportunity to provide support to Resource Families and their children. All Board positions are voluntary and unpaid. We do this because we love children and want to support the families that care for them in times of crisis. In addition to our famous Clothing Closet and Diaper distribution, our enrichment and academic scholarships, free tickets to museums, sports and cultural events, our monthly meetings offer a place for Resource Families to share their experiences, build relationships and stay informed.

As a foster parent and the Treasurer for ACFPA, I am both aware of the challenges of being a foster parent and the importance of the support that is provided by our organization. Through our monthly meetings and social events, we provide a space for foster, adoptive and relative resource families to connect and build relationships, as well as to receive training on important and relevant topics. Through our donation program, Clothes Closet and Scholarships, we support families with the resources they need to care for their children and enrich their lives. As of 2017, our scholarship program has provided close to $7,000 to families for both enrichment and academic support.

Being a foster parent is extremely rewarding but also hard work. There any many logistical as well as emotional challenges involved and it is easy to get burnt out without the support of a group like this. In addition to practical offerings like the Clothing Closet, diapers, trainings and scholarships, this association serves as a safe place for foster and adoptive families to meet, share ideas and support one another through the process.

As a licensed foster parent myself I know the time and commitment that is required to care for our county's children. The ACFPA supports foster parents and relative caregivers, and in turn the children that they are caring for, in some of the following ways: toy and clothing giveaways, trainings, fun events such as Back to School Picnics, Birthday and Holiday Parties. Also, the ACFPA monthly meetings are a great place to network and learn about regulation updates impacting caregivers.
