I adopted 2 dogs from LDDR, and referred a friend, they are one of the best rescues out there, run by many caring volunteers. I don't understand why anyone could say they are a 'scam', they do check out homes prior to adoption to verify they are going to a good home and it's a good fit. it's because they care!
