My Nonprofit Reviews
Review for A Ban Against Neglect Inc., Carrboro, NC, USA
My work with ABAN and the young men and women who, in some cases, have put their lives on hold to help make a difference in the lives of young women in Ghana has been inspiring to me. I am so encouraged by these recent college graduates who saw a problem and realized that they could be a part of the solution. These are the type of young people who should be celebrated in the news rather than our shallow focus on celebrity.
ABAN seeks to empower young women and especially young mothers by teaching them life skills, parenting skills and vocational skills so that these young women can be productive citizens and role models in their own communities. The young women are taught how basic business skills so that they can be entrepreneurs if they desire. Then they are taught specific skills based on the careers they would like to pursue. To help make all this possible, ABAN employs community workers to produce beautiful hand-batiked products lined with plastic water sachets that have been recovered and recycled from the streets.
The vision by recent college graduates to use an environmentally friendly product lining and to provide steady employment for members of the neighboring community as well as training opportunities for women who had no means to support a child is so amazing to me. That's why I volunteer as a board member for ABAN. I love the mission and I love working with incredibly bright and committed young people.
