My Nonprofit Reviews
Review for Breast Cancer Survivors Foundation Inc, Aventura, FL, USA
Based on this "foundation's" 2013 financials, they spent less than $200,000 of their total $4.6 million raised on programs. More than $3.3 million of the $4.6 million they received in donations went to pay for fundraising costs. Look it up: search the term "990 search," you should be able to look at their IRS form 990 for free, and see for yourself. As a former employee of United Way, I'm totally ashamed of these kinds of organizations. A good nonprofit shouldn't report more than 15% of funds raised as fundraising costs. They should be giving 85% of funds raised toward program expenses. To put it as plainly as possible, if you want 75 cents of every dollar you donate to go toward paying the salaries of the telemarketers who call you, by all means donate to this organization. As for me, I pledged to give $25 for breast cancer awareness, so I'm going to donate that money to either the American Cancer Society or the Susan G Komen foundation, once I check both of their 990 forms. I don't want to give almost $19 of my hard-earned $25 to a fundraising company.
