Review for Gateway Festival Orchestra Of St Louis, Saint Louis, MO, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Orchestral music is usually presented with great formality in a lavish performance space which promotes this music as intended for the elite and sophisticated. Not so, the summer GFO concerts in Washington University's Quad. The power of great orchestra music is presented outside with the informality and serenity or the space a part of the listening experience. Sandals, shorts and a lawn chair are all that is required to soak up the magic of the concerts of classical music. Special memorable performances are more unique when experienced under the stars and in stunning quietness in our bustling city. The GFO is an excellent professional orchestra providing summer concerts of high quality performances.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

live professional quality performances.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Hire an exec dir. and fund raiser.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

It is stronger musically and has a more efficient and active board this last year.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

passionate about bringing their skills and support to the cause.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

expand their offering of orchestral concerts and provide chamber music concerts at selected venues in the area and concerts for youth in the summer and all year round.

Ways to make it better...

the weather is not too hot.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Funds. From the beginning we have relied on partial payments, always declining, for the musicians. The Music Performance Fund also included covering performance rights payments and taxes. We don't have that anymore.

One thing I'd also say is that...

Jim Richards is an amazing musical, patient and demanding conductor. We are very lucky to have him at the helm.

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

About every month

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

Role:  Professional with expertise in this field & I was in the GFO at the start and have continued except for several years. I've served on the board and because of RAC support through the NEA began to attend conventions of the American Symphony Orchestra League which are inspiring.
