Review for Scott Valley Focus Inc, Fort Jones, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Scott Valley Focus is the umbrella non-profit for the Scott Valley Family Resource Center (SVFRC). I have been a board member in 2010, but I am also a volunteer and a licensed therapist & educator who can't say enough about this wonderful organization. SVFRC is a safe and supportive organization that serves ALL citizens in small & rural Scott Valley. This past Christmas I helped make soup and was Santa's helper for a holiday drop-in. Children, teens, and their families came in to get warm, have some healthy soup (along with a sugar cookie that the kids could decorate themselves!), listen and sing to some carols, get homemade knit hats (local women took time to knit and crochet these warm hats) and to see Santa. I have heard stories and witnessed kids without computers have access to these; SVFRC employees & volunteers help people with mental illnesses get help, coordinate housing & food finds for those without enough funds (they also provide free soup every Wednesday - come one down!), arrange for people to get wood and/or help with their heating bills (it snows here and temps can dip below zero in winter), handout free books, offer literacy supports, create safe and sober halloween gatherings, provide chilcare, lunch, and the building for alcohol and drug family prevention classes, parenting classes, senior services and more. I could go on and on. SVFRC, you rock!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

witnessing all the ways SVFRC has touched many lives. Everytime I have been able to volunteer, donate and/or participate in one of their many events/services, I have been spiritually and emotionally rewarded.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

SVFRC is only limited by funds; if they had more funds, they would be able to reach out into the community in even more ways!

Role:  Board Member & I have been a volunteer, referred clients to SVFRC (I am a Marriage & Family Therapist), and in 2010 was a Board Member.

Review for Siskiyou Arts Council, Mount Shasta, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Siskiyou Arts Council (SAC) has taken tiny grant funds and created big results for our small, rural community! I have been honored to be a part of SAC in several ways: 1) For the past 3 summers I have been honored to facillitate a writing class in Juvenille Hall. It is wonderful to be a healing witness to teens sharing their stories. Its also wonderful to see when their faces beam with light, when they have an "ah ha" moment. Students begin to honor their stories thus far and also begin to realize they have the abiity to change the genre of their stories; they recognize that the possibility lies within them to change/create a new, more positive, next chapter in their lives...2) SAC has been instrumental in bringing Poetry Out Loud (POL) to Siskiyou Co high schools...I have been a volunteer judge at Etna High each year POL has been happening here and the presentations get better & better. POL is a great program that allows kids to expand their understanding of poems and poets, increase their confidence to share poems with their peers, and the opportunity to win scholarships for themselves and their school..3) Finally, I watch with delight as SAC continues to sponsor viewings of paintings, sculptures, music, dance and other creative mediums, in every area of Siskiyou Co (we are the size of Rhode Island, with multiple mountain ranges, valleys, rivers throughout. It takes lots of committment by the director and volunteers to do this). I have been to art openings in Mt. Shasta, creative dance presentations in Juvenille Hall, put up posters with the art work of a SAC project helping adults with disabilities (conducted in Yreka), used notecards that help the Art Bus Project (where volunteers go in an old school bus all over the county offering art classes and info to children), visited the wonderful Marble Mtn Gallery in Ft. Jones (a Co-Op of artists that wouldn't be without SAC's help), and more. SAC brings beauty and Soul to us all! Thanks, SAC....Donna May, MFT

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

...myriads of ways, in multiple places, and with various populations (children, teens, elders, disabled, disenfranchised) throughout Siskiyou Co.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I don't know what this could be without additional funding. As it is, I think the director continues to do a remarkable job of bringing SAC and the arts to every area of Siskiyou Co...

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

...two fold: 1) the ability to participate in the creative process with others; 2) as a recipient of the beauty and creative expression of others.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

I have been involved with SAC's director, many, many of the volunteers that make SAC possible, the teachers/artists who work in various programs, the artists themselves...

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Siskiyou Co has an extremely high unemployment rate...10 million bucks could be utilized to expand the arts to many and, perhaps create a cottage industry/company to give jobs to many.

Ways to make it better...

...Siskiyou Arts Council had more funding to bring even more art and art projects to our county!

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

1) the size & geography of our county(the size of Rhode Island, intersected with mountain ranges, valleys, multiple rivers; staff/volunteers travel long distances to cover events & areas of county (gas funds need to be stretched a long way!)

One thing I'd also say is that...

Siskiyou Co is a creative, happening, place with SAC leading the way in bringing a diverse range of arts to our communities and people...

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

About every month

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

2010

Role:  Professional with expertise in this field & I've taught writing in Juvenille Hall; judged Poetry Out Loud competitions, been a witness to wonderful art/creative endeavors!.
