Review for Childrens Health Council Inc, Palo Alto, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Although our family have not been clients of CHC in the usual sense, we have received exceptional kindness and support from both the leadership and various members of staff. A year or so ago, Rosalie Whitlock generously took more than an hour of her time to go over the results of psychological testing we had done elsewhere, helping me to understand the implications more fully and plan our next steps. Rosalie's understanding of LD and ADhD is profound and she is exceptionally skilled at translating her technical understanding into terms that a lay person can grasp. When I sought help at a later time, attempting to understand if I should continue seeking ADD medication for my teenaged daughter, who doesn't fit the classic hyperactive model of attentional difficulties and wasn't passing the standard "checklist" approach to diagnosing ADD, she got me in touch with Dr. Glenn Elliott. Although Dr. Elliott focuses his practice on younger children, he spent several hours with me answering questions about the various forms of ADD and the medications available for treatment. As a result, I continued my search for a psychiatrist with a different approach and in the end got her the help that she needed. We also had occasion to speak with Dr. Kovar, who was a font of knowledge about the subtleties of psychological testing and whom I would have loved to have worked with had the timing been different.

Their impressive staff and their flexible willingness to help is only one of the ways in which I think CHC is an important resource to the community beyond their specific clients. Their role both in training upcoming professionals in the field of LD and ADhD and in providing parent education is well known. In addition, they provide meeting places for various outside organizations working to support families and schools who work with kids with learning and attentional differences. As just one example, I went to my first meeting of Parents Education Network of Silicon Valley (PEN-SV) at CHC and it has been a continuing resource for me.

All in all, I can't say enough positive things about CHC. My husband and I donate to the organization and will continue to do so because of the unique combination of services and expertise that they provide. We're lucky to have them right here in Palo Alto.
