My Nonprofit Reviews
Review for God's Love We Deliver, Inc., New York City, NY, USA
Why I volunteer and what are the rewards………….hmmmmmmmm……….let me think!
Have been 'at it' now for over 2.5 years. In fact, just reached my 300 hour milestone and was generously reward with a goodie! First off, can't speak more highly of individuals such as my 'volunteer specialist" Jana Levinson and Kate Suhr and of course my 'kitchen shift chief," Andre. Each make the experience of traveling on three trains, 14 stops, 3/4 of a mile walk and roughly 50-60 minutes each way to get the temporary facility in Brooklyn bearable each and every Wednesday morning. Also rounding out the experience, apart from my fellow volunteers is the entire kitchen staff – from head chief to the guys at the sinks—each and every one possesses heart and generosity.
Apart from knowing I am doing a good deed especially to assist those who are truly less fortunate both physically and financially than myself there are personal reward well beyond the simple transactional tasks of food prep and pack-out.
Volunteering isn’t a totally self-less act. My time with GLWD has been truly cathartic—benefits multiplied. What started as a basic exercise has turned into something much greater in reward. It has been life-altering as in the way I view and value my own life; my own advantages both earned and bestowed upon me by chance.
In age of new technology which often creates a false sense of ‘community,’ first-hand volunteering has provided me with a truly authentic sense of shared values and common goals. I am proud to call my Wednesday crew of regulars, my community.
