Review for Transcultural Exchange Inc, Boston, MA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I n my 10 years running 2 University galleries, I must say that TCE’s director, Mary Sherman, stands out as a singular visionary leader of an organization that has no equal. TCE excels on so many levels. Its visionary leadership launches meaningful international projects that result in high-quality exhibitions and programs, it sees them through fruition with every facet of planning, funding, execution, and publicizing, and all while maintaining good and open communication with artists and organizations around the world. Where others may see boundaries of language, location, resources – Ms. Sherman sees opportunities for bringing artists together, for presenting art to new audiences and in new ways. I have had the priviledge to participate with TCE as both an artist and as a gallerist. Involvement with TCE at the galleries have resulted in continual benefits including: -Increased foot traffic -Provided volunteer opportunities for artists to assist with Here,There,Everywhere projects/installations -Brought international residency director to campus and to conduct studio visits Resulted in a summer residency for two regional artists -Provided opportunities for students from across the curriculum to meet international artists and to see collaborative projects from around the globe -Identified financial resources and methods for financial collaborations. -Introduced new artists to the gallery to be considered for future solo exhibitions -provided a mentoring opportunity for staff member Personal Benefits -Opened up a new dimension to my studio practice -Resulted in publication in a Turkish arts periodical. -Allowed me to collaborate with two German artists and to exhibit in Frankfurt Germany.. - Provided opportunity to be in a catalogue with international distribution. -invitation to two Eastern Europe residency programs -invitation to exhibit project at museum in China I love telling other artists about TCE – I know that they will have their world opened up and that they will go on to tell other artists, who will go on to tell other artists….

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

traveling through Eastern Europe and China meeting visual artists and coming to new understandings as a consequence.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Increase their funding so that they could hire more assistants.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Working with an organization whose actions do the talking.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Professional and helpful. Interesting and interested.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Change the "Art World" as we know it....perhaps change the "world" as we know it, too.

Ways to make it better...

These experiences are unparalled. Could only be made better by being able to include more participants.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Maintaing their ambitious programs in the face of economic challenges.

One thing I'd also say is that...

Get involved with TCE - you'll be glad you did.

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

About once a year

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?
