Review for African Childrens Haven, Galveston, TX, USA

Rating: 5 stars

As an expatriate living in Nairobi, Kenya for the past 16 years, I've been both privileged and proud to see first hand the impact of African Childrens Haven, especially its efforts to provide educational opportunities in the slums of Nairobi. It is difficult to capture in words the huge difference that ACH is making in the lives of hundreds of young people who otherwise would grow up with little or no hope for a better future. But when you see these kids, when you see the wonder in their eyes and hear the enthusiasm bursting from the classrooms, you feel their excitement and optimism, and you can't help but become excited and optimistic yourself. ACH is a truly wonderful and extremely well managed organization, which is something of a rarity in the world of non-profits these days. In my professional life, I've worked with a large number of non-profits, but few that embody the kind of passion that drives ACH or have the kind of long-term impacts they are achieving. They are changing the futures of African youngsters by instilling hope, optimism and a strong sense of self-worth. These children are the future of Kenya and of Africa more broadly; all they need is the chance to learn. ACH gives them that chance.

Review for Aid For Africa, Inc, Chevy Chase, MD, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Aid for Africa came into being when i was working with the World Agroforestry Centre in Nairobi, Kenya. We were approached by them with the idea of raising our profile along with other notable NGOs doing important and worthwhile work on behalf of the poor in Africa...in our case, resource-poor smallholder farmers striving to improve their livelihoods while also improving their natural resource base (soils, water, etc.) by planting high-value trees on their farms.

We found Aid for Africa to be remarkably effective and engaging, especially with respect to its emphasis on science-based agricultural development and the links that it provided us to a variety of organizations that embraced our vision and approach to supporting the rural poor. We found ourselves working with a number of organizations that we may otherwise not have even known about.

As an international research and development centre supported by over 60 donors, we greatly appreciated Aid for Africa's focus on good governance, equity, and financial transparency. It has been a pleasure to watch Aid for Africa grow over the years, broadening its influence and impact, and continuing to increase the visibility of Africa, the plight of many who live there, and showcasing creative and practical solutions to a range of challenges. I give Aid for Africa the strongest endorsement possible.

Review for African Childrens Haven, Galveston, TX, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I have lived and worked in Africa for nearly 15 years in the area of agriculture and community development. In that time, I've supported the efforts of a number of organizations purportedly engaged in activities aimed at bettering the lives of the poor, and especially children. A common experience with all these organizations, save one, has been that when the project ended and/or funds dried up, there was not much of a legacy left behind to perpetuate the benefits of the organizations' activities. I believe that a primary reason for this is that most such activities comprise external interventions that, however well meaning they may be, lack the organic community-level genesis needed to ensure sustainability.

African Children's Haven is markedly different in that it is dedicated to supporting local, community-based initiatives that are begun by concerned individuals and groups who, because they live there, are in it for the long haul. Through such community-based efforts, ACH is building sustainable educational opportunities for children and orphans coping with the terror imposed by severe poverty. A bedrock principle of ACH is that the future of Africa truly does rest in the small hands of its children, often those with few or no socioeconomic advantages and little hope for happy and productive lives. ACH thus targets its efforts in support of locally developed and locally led initiatives aimed precisely at opening doors for disadvantaged children, creating opportunities and hope where none existed before.

This is what makes African Children's Haven special to me personally, what sets it apart from other organizations attempting to do similar work, and what will enable it to succeed over the long term, while others come and go.
