Review for Voices of Survivors Foundation, Houston, TX, USA

Rating: 4 stars

I have been reading and watching the Voices of Survivors Foundation web site for a while now, and I would like to tell you that it is designed to give cancer patients a voice to articulate their experience and to give and find support in an on-line environment. A network of friends has been formed through Facebook that are linked by the common denominator--CANCER. Those of us who have had cancer and have family and friends dealing with this disease can share their experiences, which gives readers and listeners an opportunity to be a part of something positive. Information shared includes very helpful knowledge on the type of cancer the survivor is or has fought against--how they suspected or became diagnosed with it, how they were treated, what social and clinical support they received, and real concrete help to a reader who may think he or she had cancer or who has been diagnosed similarly. I have come to know Lynn Lane through our Facebook friendship and through his interviews, posted through a link to the Voices of Survivors Foundation web site. I am also planning to share my "voice" as a malignant melanoma survivor and have learned a lot about different types of cancer through others who have shared theirs. I can't say enough good about the current impact and potential for impacting the lives of those who feel afraid, isolated, defeated, or are terribly ill from treatments. Having a support system is always helpful for any of the difficulties life throws at us, and Voices of Survivors Foundation is a marvelous organization.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the information contained in "Voices'" testimonies. I have learned about M.D. Anderson and other great cancer treatment centers. I have also become more aware of how cancer patients want to be treated by their friends and family members.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I cannot offer any suggestions for change. Lynn Lane is constantly tweaking and improving the site and encourages those he meets, who have had cancer, to share their voices.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the idea that I am not alone in having had cancer. My stepson is also going from month to month with a recurrence of cancer that is manageable, but not curable. Now, I feel part of something larger than myself or cancer.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Lynn Lane. I know him through Facebook, and we have been in communication now for almost a year.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

expand their reach and bring in even more people. I believe perhaps some funding for cancer research or support would come out of this organization if they had $10 million.

Ways to make it better...

I can't think of anything that would have improved my experience with Voices of Survivors.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

widening their reach in the "cancer community."

One thing I'd also say is that...

I am very glad Lane found me as a fan of Randy Pausch and asked me to be his Facebook friend. He is a genuine person, who I would like to be around face-to-face sometime.

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

About every week

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

Role:  General Member of the Public & I regularly read and watch Voices of the participants and try to provide a small amount of financial support and emotional support for Lynn.
