Review for Graham Johnson Cultural Arts Endowment, Wake Forest, NC, USA

Rating: 5 stars

The GJCAE has been very instrumental in helping young children and adults to develop a higher sense of self confidence and worth by encouraging self development through volunteerism and the arts. Started as a positive to be gained from the suicide death of Graham Johnson at age 15, it was intended to take a tragic event and make it a positive for the community so moved by the loss. For the tremendous amount of support the family received they chose to turn this tragedy into a community opportunity and has done so with numerous festivals, concerts, teen battle of the bands, open mikes, cultural arts programming, financial and emotional support for those who have suffered similar losses. Adopted has been the slogan of "life is for the living" honoring survivors of suicide and the branding of what the foundation has done: "We Build Community" which is the process of building goals and ambitions through volunteering and believing in the causes.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

motivating the larger community to become active working to make life more enjoyable. Tremendous outpouring of support for the many projects the Foundation has chosen to start, continue and sponsor.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

create a more concise fund raising effort.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

it's all about people caring about others and forgetting the "me" part of making things better for not one self but for all.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

8-90, old, some crippled, some crazy, but all working together in a good way to help each other.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

help foster in the concept that life is truly for those who are living and master the goals or putting others first, before oneself for the common good. Would also teach many the benefits of entrepreneurship in our society and the benefits that flow.

Ways to make it better...

there had been more money to help market the many events the GJCAE completed.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

financial obstacles to continuing to have basically one family support the risk side.

One thing I'd also say is that...

This group is truly "community". They accomplish so many tasks and without any government help but from the shoulders of labor from the residents who believe in the cause.

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?
