Review for Human Health Project, Los Angeles, CA, USA
I've acted as a patient advocate for a young man with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, using HHP as both sounding board and source of advice. Just the process of creating the questions I needed to become a patient advocate empowered me, the patient and the circle of support around the patient during his almost 12 months in hospital/undergoing extreme doses of chemotherapy. HHP gave me the language and a role which the hospital could relate to and support (the immediate family hadn't built any links to the treatment or the future outcomes). HHP offers far more than the opportunity to learn about 'dis-ease', it provides a bridge to a long term constructive perspective developing a health process for all involved. It moves us away from expert:patient, and engages everyone in quality support of life. HHP's role is critical to creating long term bridges for health.
