Review for Mailisita Foundation, Green Oaks, IL, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Very much of a grass roots, hands-on approach to helping AIDS orphans in Moshi Tanzania and also the local economy through job creation.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the village of Mailisita, Tanzania.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Seek grants from institutions or foundations who focus on AIDS and eduation in Africa.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The experience of working directly with the impoverished and disadvantaged of sub-saharan Africa.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Variety of professions (medical, engineering, financial services, etc.) all applying their skills in one way or another to move the project forward.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

It couldn't spend 10 million effectively. Very much of a focused effort centered on lifting a particular village out of poverty. Even 1 million would be more than enough to complete the vison.

Ways to make it better...

The experience would be even more rewarding if I spoke Swahili. The language barrier prevents a deeper level of communication and relationship building.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

fund raising. The construction plans for 2010 and 2011 will require them to raise 50% more money per year than they have been able to the past two years.

One thing I'd also say is that...

The financially self-sustainable angle is clever. Neat idea to be able to raise funds once, and have change be self-sustaining and more or less permanent.

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

Role:  Volunteer & I have gone on several trips to their project in Tanzania to work on school construction.
