My Nonprofit Reviews
Review for Empowerment International Inc, Boulder, CO, USA
I visited EI in Granada, Nicaragua in March 2013. Viewed from the US one may think that EI provides only tutorial assistance to help these children in school. I was so wrong. The poverty in Nica is unimaginable. It's not a matter of just tutoring but working with the family and the child's entire situation to break the cycle of poverty that is so pervasive in the barrios. For example, getting parents to see that staying in school will help the child and family in the long run but this is tough when begging in the streets provides a few immediate coins and children are more likely to tug at the heart strings of tourists.
Kathy and her staff empower families and children to do for themselves. They provide guidance and not a
hand out. They truly seek to teach a child to fish rather than to hand them a fish.
Kathy is dedicated to the long run with her children and deeply cares for the children of the barrio. I now support three children and I know that my donation goes to Kathy's program and the children of the barrios.
