Review for Shakespeare Youth Festival (formerly Los Angeles Drama Club, Inc), Los Angeles, CA, USA
Working with the LADC has been such a special opportunity. As a college student interested in theatre, it is so refreshing to be around such motivated and energized students who are eager to perform. The potential of these kids is inspiring--they, without inhibition, pick up Shakespeare scenes and fully delve into their characters growing immensely by the end of their programs. LADC combines Yoga, Improv Games, and Scene Study as well as bringing in visiting artists and coaches to allow the kids the chance to reach their full potential.
Shakespeare in the City, the free Shakespeare program for at-risk children, proves the power of Shakespeare's words. These kids completely take over and make the words their own, giving so much to the opportunity they are given to freely express themselves in a safe place (on the stage) when perhaps they are not always given this opportunity at home.
The program is co-run by two incredible teachers who really have a grasp on how to work with these kids. The volunteer experience has brought new insight into my life as the kids have been an inspiration to my own personal theatrical pursuits as well as reminding me to always maintain the playfulness of a child.
