La Societe des Quarant Hommes et Huit Chevaux is French. In English it means "The Society of Forty Men or Eight Horses". La Societe is an American veterans organization formed in Paris, France, in 1920 at the end of World War I. We are ninety-three years old with many local chapters in every state in the union, and overseas in Germany, France, The Philipines, and Mexico among others. Our international headquarters are located in Indianapolis, Indiana, across the street from the American Legion. We used to be brother organizations but times change.

My particular "locale" or "Voiture" is Portland Voiture 25, Portland, Oregon, formed in 1924. At one time we had over five hundred members but time and declining health have reduced our number to twenty. We are trying to recruit new, younger members and welcome all eligible vetrerans, male and female, honorably discharged or currently active. Ours is the "fun" organization with laughter and camraderie at every "promenade" (meeting) and numerous civic events where we proudly represent veterans from all branches. Our special attraction is a 1910 Renault Paris taxi that we drive in parades and display in public. It is an authentic "Taxi de la Marne" that took French troops to the front in 1914 in "The Charge of the Marne Taxis". We would eagerly welcome you to check us out and consider membership.
