Review for Asante Africa Foundation Inc, Livermore, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I've been involved with Asante Africa Foundation for 8 years as a volunteer, & 7 as a board member. I have so much respect for the work, which is respectful of local expertise and culture, not about "fixing" problems or handouts. It's about empowering youth to be the change they want to see in their world. Our earliest scholars are now graduating from university or starting their own businesses, and paying it forward by sponsoring younger students & continuing to volunteer.
I have sponsored the education of two different students, & recently wrote a blog post about the difference this makes in their lives. https://asanteafrica.org/unscripted-and-unstoppable/

I've always been impressed with the organization's focus on results and transparency. Every year they continue to improve their monitoring & evaluation, so they can demonstrate to current & prospective donors the magnitude of the positive impact they're having on the lives of those they serve. Their beneficiaries are also taught to "pay it forward," and we are seeing that they become donors as they matriculate and become producing members of society. I'm extremely proud of the work we do, of the individuals involved in that work, and of the students who carry it forward. They truly are the change agents who are transforming the future for their communities.

I've been involved with Asante Africa Foundation for almost 8 years. I was introduced by Dennis, my Tanzanian friend, who stressed the quality of their approach and the integrity of their leadership. It's pretty compelling when a person who's on the ground says, "Really, they're different. They work with the locals to understand the core of the problem and create results that last." I went from donor to volunteer to board member, because the more I learned about this organization, the more impressed I was. Not only did Dennis's claims of systems thinking prove true, I learned that there's a focus on continuous improvement. We are constantly evaluating our results and refining our approach to make sure we're having the greatest possible impact. The founder's roots in science and innovation play a strong role in fostering a culture that is highly accountable and results driven, as well as forward thinking. It's been particularly affirming to see those who were the cute & sometimes shy children in our early photos pay it forward & grow into leadership positions, becoming the voice for education and leadership in their communities.

I started volunteering on the marketing committee, then joined the Board of Directors. That was over 5 years ago. Every step of the way, I've been impressed by the rigor and transparency with which business is conducted, & the devotion to the mission on the part of every volunteer, staff member & director. Nothing is more meaningful than meeting the people in person whose lives we've changed, and who are transforming the world around them.

I started volunteering with Asante Africa Foundation in 2011. I've been a board member since 2012, & continue to volunteer with the marketing team. From the start I was very impressed with the organization's clarity of mission, fiscal responsibility & common sense approach to making a difference. As I got to know more, I was impressed by the opportunity volunteers have to build their resumes with valuable skills. Now, as our very first students are finishing university & embarking on their careers, I'm most proud of the sustainability of the work we do. By instilling not only skills but a pay it forward mentality, this organizations is truly empowering East Africa's youth to not just to thrive themselves but to catalyze positive change, locally & globally. As we've matured, additional rigor in monitoring & evaluation has enabled us to start quantifying the impact of this amazing ripple effect. This summer I had the opportunity to meet some of these young rising stars, as well as our staff. I'm proud, honored & humble to work with all of them.

When I visited Tanzania in 2006, I was deeply touched by the value people place on education (kids don't beg for candy or money, but for pens & books), and the pride that shines in even the poorest village. When I met Erna last year & heard about the wonderful work they were doing, I knew I wanted to help. This isn't just another charity that sends $ overseas or "teaches" Africans to do it "our way." Asante Africa works very closely with local communities, families & educators to figure out what solutions will best target the root causes for why kids aren't going to school, or doing well in class. Well over 90% of funds go directly to programs in Tanzania & Kenya.

How did you learn about this organization?

After visiting Tanzania, I stayed in touch with my safari guide. In 2011, he came to the US for a visit. By this time he had finished college & started his own tour business. He was also on the board of Asante Africa Foundation; turns out Erna & her husband Mark had been on one of his safaris the year before us. He introduced me to this crazy, motivated, inspirational dynamo of a woman & I learned about the great things they were doing to literally transform children's lives. I knew it was something I wanted to be a part of!

Role:  Board Member & In addition to serving on the Board of Directors, I am helping Asante Africa with marketing & branding efforts.
