My Nonprofit Reviews
Review for Pace, Pittsburgh, PA, USA
Volunteering can make a difference in people's lives. I do volunteer work in Pace School, a special school for emotionally disturbed and autistic children. A competent, caring staff at Pace provides ongoing care and crisis intervention as needed. I have found that most of the time, most of the kids are perfectly pleasant, attentive, appreciative. When they are not, the staff takes over.
How do I fit in as a volunteer? One-on-one, I help kids understand their school work; as a class speaker, I tell them about my experiences and observations, about interesting bits of knowledge I have picked up in my 86 years of life. I try to treat them with patience, respect, understanding, honesty. The response of students and staff has been amazingly enthusiastic.
I am convinced that I am making a difference, and that makes me happy.
