Review for International Bridges To Justice, Boston, MA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

IBJ is a small organization that gets big results for its efforts. Its ultimate aim is simple: end torture worldwide. It has programs in some of the most challenging countries in the world in terms of torture: China, Zimbabwe Rwanda, India. And rather than focus on high profile political torture cases, it instead works to stop the countless cases of torture perpetrated against ordinary defendants caught up in the criminal justice system. But for IBJ, these untold thousands of poor individuals would be forgotten.

Another strong point of the organization is its cost effectiveness. The staff is lean, and it posts high quality training materials on its website for lawyers around the world to access. In its in-country programs, it works through carefully selected local advocates, and also is careful to build support from within the host governments. This is not easy, but somehow IBJ has a great track record doing it.

Having seen many "rule of law" NGOs operate throughout the world, I have witnessed many programs succeed and fail. IBJ stands out among these due to its focus, the commitment of its team, and the results it is getting under very challenging circumstances. A visit to its website is time well spent.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I have worked in Cambodia since 2003, and maintain relations with many public interest lawyers there. I have heard them report that local judges in the Cambodian provinces specifically say that they really rely on the IBJ field lawyers to provide proper legal counsel and protection to indigent clients who otherwise would be caught up in the abuses of the criminal justice system.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I would propose that IBJ direct its efforts to many more countries.

Role:  Professional with expertise in this field & I have gotten to know the staff at IBJ, and now assist the organization with its development, planning, etc.
