My Nonprofit Reviews
Review for Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Research Foundation, New York, NY, USA
The Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Research Foundation is a unique nonprofit organization that provides funding into the causes of Alzheimer's disease and the search for a cure for the debilitating illness that affects more than 5 million Americans and many millions more worldwide. Almost all of the money raised goes to fund Alzheimer's research, working with researchers at the world renowned Rockefeller University.
The money goes to fund basic research -- the kind of research that scientists must do to understand the underlying mechanisms of disease. As such, the work is not always "sexy" -- that is, it does not always have an immediate impact or practical application. But it is only through this kind of basic research that scientists can better understand a disease, create new and more effective treatments, and one day find a cure.
The work of The Fisher Center has been written up in publications like The New York Times, where the work of Nobel-prize winner Paul Greengard has received funding into the basic causes of Alzheimer's disease. It is this kind of groundbreaking research that will set the way for more breakthroughs and advances in the field of Alzheimer's treatment.
I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
I have been following the work of the Fisher Center for over 7 years. in that time, they have expanded their Web site, which serves as an important resource for health consumers in the Alzheimer's field. Both people with Alzheimer's and the caregivers who care for them can go to the Web site and read doctor-reviewed news reports. The work of Paul Greengard's lab and other labs funded by the group is leading to important advances in understanding what goes wrong in the brains of those with Alzheimer's.
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
Increase funding to the organization so they can continue to provide important funding to the scientists who are working toward finding a cure for Alzheimer's.
