Purple WINGS has helped me refind my passion in social justice as well as for youth advocacy. I have volunteered here for almost 3 years and have worked with a variety of young girls who have witnessed and experienced violence. The passionate volunteers and staff are such a pleasure to work with and push me to be a better activist, advocate, and mentor.
I remember first finding Purple WINGS in my search for a practicum site for my degree. I wanted the position so badly that I ended up contacting the organization instead of letting the contact me (desperate, I know). Since I started in August of 2018, the organization has exceeded any expectation I had for a practicum experience. The staff is amazing and so supportive, and they truly know how to welcome someone to a team. In addition, the entire staff treats the girls with the utmost respect and honestly does care for each individual case. They are faced with challenges everyday and constantly rise to meet the occasion. Toshia is such an understanding figure in all of the girls' lives. She believes the girls when they break down and tell her the hardest parts of their lives when no one else will listen. I wish I had Toshia and Purple WINGS when I was growing up. I would not have attempted suicide if I had the support system that Toshia and Purple WINGS provides.
I have been volunteering with Purple WINGS since July of 2018. I am continually amazed by the dedicated team that serves at this non profit. They work nights to be there for the population they serve- Teenage girls!! They work to make a difference in the lives of girls that would otherwise be ignored or condemned for their mistakes. They give them life skills for dealing with difficulties at home, at school, and in their personal life journey. They help with anger management and have a fantastic 12 week program for at-risk girls in the Las Vegas community. Their heart for these girls is truly huge! They do child advocacy at juvenile court and mentoring for girls caught up in the system that have experienced sexual assault/abuse, domestic violence, and stalking. They break the cycle and come in with love, encouragement, and empowerment for girls with low self esteem that have been abused in every way possible. Their influence is huge. They are always fundraising for bigger things to do on the international/global scale to help survivors of human trafficking. Miss Toshia (the executive director) is known in the field for her tenacity and expertise working with victims of sexual abuse and human trafficking. I love this organization so much for what they do and the impact they make!! Thanks Purple WINGS >>> you keep soaring higher.
Purple W.I.N.G.S org is a journey, not a destination. I started my journey in January 2018, and ever since im diving in this ocean of opportunities and challenges surrounded by a great team. It is an organization that seeks to develop and enrich its clients, programs and volunteers. After completing our 3 months group program, we get to see the results and the accomplishments of our former clients and measure our own success. These girls are moving mountains to succeed and to reach their goals and dreams. It is an honor and pleasure to be part of this organization that is helping, empowering and developing our community.
For over a year I've had the pleasure to serve with Purple W.I.N.G.S. to help our young girls succeed in the Las Vegas community. The mentors and facilatators truly make an impact on their lives which they will always remember.
At 17 I was deeply troubled and given one chance to change my mindset and behaviors before I became a legal adult. When I came to Purple WINGS I was amazed by the space that Miss Toshia, Miss Sandy, Miss T and Miss Zidonia created for all of us- a literal haven where we could express our feelings completely freely while being given the best guidance on family, society, relationships, and self value our leaders could offer to benefit us and help us be the catalyst of our own beneficial changes. Miss Toshia taught me invaluable lessons about what it means to be a woman, to be a survivor of domestic and romantic abuse, and what it takes to help yourself in order to help others. I cannot express my love and gratitude for this organization in words. This non-profit deserves publicity and attention because these leading women are truly changing the lives of young girls of every kind. Their work and charity for sex trafficking and abuse is monumentally important to the organization as society continues to try and diminish the voices of women. Miss Toshia should absolutely be given the opportunity to spread her knowledge and wisdom to every girl and woman she can.
