Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animals

Mission: PAWS (Pound Animal Welfare Society of Montclair, Inc.) is a non-profit, 501(c)3 charitable organization dedicated to the humane treatment of animals and finding homes for stray and abandoned cats and dogs in our community.

Results: In our 40+ years of service to the community, PAWS has developed much expertise and a wonderful network of caring people, enabling us to be a highly responsive and flexible animal rescue group. We strive to answer every call and email in a timely manner, and offer guidance and alternatives to keep animals in their home, or when necessary, find a new home. We currently maintain two small sanctuaries – one for dogs and one for cats – which, along with our strong fostering network, enable us to continue sheltering a limited number of animals in need. At any given time, we typically can care for up to 8 dogs and 50 cats and kittens.

Target demographics: homeless pets

Direct beneficiaries per year: We successfully adopted many homeless cats and dogs. Animals were also pulled from high kill shelters and saved from euthanasia.

Geographic areas served: Montclair, NJ - Essex County, NJ

Programs: PAWS focuses on “rescue” and “reduce” through careful adoption, fostering, and humane education. The initiative expands our ability for: finding animals good, appropriate, forever homes; preventing warehousing and/or euthanizing adoptable animals; changing public consciousness about the value of animals and our responsibilities to them; helping address the puppy mills issue; and promoting spay/neuter.

RE: Charlie and Ginger My husband and I were heartbroken when my black kitty cat, The Pooch, passed away in September of 2012, at the age of 16. My husband and I had always talked about adopting 2 black kittens from our local animal rescue and shelter, PAWS Montclair. In October 2012, we were ready to adopt and thought we would find 2 black kittens. We used PAWS Montclair and looked at the pictures of kitties posted on their website. On October 17th, my husband and I drove 20 minutes to Maplewood to pick up brother and sister, "Charley and Harley", 8-week-old kittens from the foster family. They had been with their foster family for just 1 week. Their story is touching. The foster Mommy wrote in her blog, "Welcome to Maplewood, little ones. 4 healthy and beautiful kittens were rescued from being euthanized last week at the eleventh hour. Thanks to the Pilots N Paws Rescue Program, they were flown from NC to NJ for a second chance at life." They needed us and we needed them. (Even if they weren't black! hehe) We immediately fell in love with them and tweaked their names slightly to Charlie and Ginger. Charlie and Ginger have a big following on Instagram with over 6,000 followers. https://www.instagram.com/charlieandginger/ The babies turn five this summer and we will have a big pawty for them, like we do every year. We are very grateful to PAWS Montclair. i have fostered dogs, adopted dogs, and worked with PAWS rescue group for years as a dog trainer/behavioral consultant, and from my experience, they are one of the VERY BEST rescues out there!

PAWS rescue group takes dogs that no one else takes from high kill shelters and from other rescue groups. They go above and beyond to make sure that they do the work necessary to get their dogs adoptable. i work with PAWS evaluating their dogs and working with any issues their dogs may have. i also do home visits and settle in sessions upon adoption. this alone has saved many adoptions! and if, for any reason, PAWS needs to take a dog back into their rescue, they do so quickly and without drama. they are wonderful and work with their foster families, giving their foster families as well as their foster dogs everything they need to be successful, happy and healthy. PAWS also works with the community, helping pet owners in need keep their beloved pets with them.
