Mission: PlayGround is the Bay Area's leading playwright incubator. Our mission is to support the identification and professional development of the Bay Area's most promising emerging playwrights and, in the process, ensure the future of the American Theatre.
Programs: PlayGround's current programs include: the Monday Night PlayLab staged reading series, featuring six monthly readings of original short works by Bay Area emerging writers; the Emerging Playwright Awards and Festival, showcasing the top six writers and their work from each season of Monday Night PlayGround; the Commissioning Initative, by which PlayGround commissions and develops 6-7 new full-length plays each season; the New Play Production Fund, facilitating the premiere of new plays by local playwrights in partnership with Bay Area theatres; the Young Playwrights Project, recognizing the Bay Area's top high school dramatists; and monthly playwriting Intensives, led by some of the Bay Area's top professional playwrights, dramaturgs and producers.
Writing is an infamously lonely undertaking. Writing plays somehow more so. To really grow as a playwright, your plays need to be read, acted, dissected, and played with by other people. PlayGround offers playwrights this opportunity, along with a strong community to fall back on and be lifted up by. This sense of community is shared not just by the writers, but among and between the directors, actors, producers, audience, and technical staff as well. PlayGround has done a tremendous job bringing talented artists together and challenging them to keep working and playing, staving off the loneliness together. To think of all PlayGround has done with its limited resources is nothing short of amazing.
