I "enlisted" with the Operation Write Home team in Feb 2012. My son had recently joined the National Guard so I knew how precious those cards and letters that I received while he was away were. I didn't hesitate to join forces with Sandy Allnock, Kris Allan and the thousands of volunteer card makers. OWH strives for the very best by offering tons of tutorials, videos, challenges and daily motivation free of charge!! I look forward to the live webcast on YouTube every Thursday which allows me to chat with fellow OWHers and learn what's going on this week in the OWH world. Sandy is the executive director and never fails to bring us a giggle or 2 during the webcast. Sandy is very interactive (is that the right word?) meaning that she reads all of the comments and requests our input on certain things that help OWH grow. It's fun, informative and very rewarding knowing that we help bring smiles to our Heroes' family and friends back home.
I always loved to make cards ever since my daughter introduced me to my first rubber stamp. And, after retirement I went into the card making full force, but I found that I made a lot more than I sent out. So when I read about Operation Write Home I knew I found a place to send my cards for a great cause. I remembered how much a letter meant to me when my soldier sent me his when he was in the Air Force during the Vietnam era. So I know the family and friends who get those cards with messages from their soldiers will be so blessed as well. This is an organization that does a wonderful thing to make the deployment of our soldiers and their families less tough.
I love card making. Simple as that. But, I was making card after card and not using a lot of them. I then found Operation Write Home. Problem solved! And in such a wonderful way. I get to make all the cards I want and some wonderful people get to use them to write home to family and friends. I am happy to have found OWH and also soooo very grateful for our Troops and all they have done for our country.
This is a fabulous organization and giving community. The overhead is unspeakably low to non-existent. Everyone, including international volunteers, spread the honor, gratefulness, and appreciate our service personnel. Further, the connections made to our service personnel last forever through the handmade cards OWH volunteers made for them to write home to love ones, family and friends. These cards remain as a piece of the service person and a memory that will last forever in their lives. All donations made to this nonprofit go to shipping boxes to our military installations, regardless of branch in the military. Without contributions of cards or monetary contributions, we would not be able to fulfill the volume of requests that have been made by our service personnel,
To be able to make cards for deployed military personnel to send home to family and friends is my way of showing respect for and saying thank you to our Heroes who sacrifice for and serve this great nation. I cannot tell you how heartwarming it is to receive a letter from the Heroes themselves telling us how glad they are that we provide these cards and how beautifully done they are. Or to receive a note from someone who received one of these cards from their deployed loved one and tell us how much it means to them to have "something" to hold with his or her own handwriting inside. It is such a small thing for me to do, but a very large priceless and important thing to them. One thought that always stays with me is one of our cards may be the last thing a loved one might receive...and that is why OWH is so important.
I used to make scrapbooks but that slowed way down when the kids and grand kids moved out of state, and most pictures are now stored digitally and easier to maintain. So I started making greeting cards, I found myself overwhelmed with them and wanted to do something worthwhile with my card making. I found "Operation Write Home" through Hero Arts on line, checked it out and was thrilled to find an organization that sent blank hand made greeting cards to our Hero's in service for them to send home to their loved ones. I cannot think of a more fulfilling way to use the talent God gave me. I have learned so many good tips on making better quality cards and have made many new friends along the way.
The art of the handwritten note is a dying one, but for these soldiers it is a way to send something back home to their loved ones that can be displayed and read over and over again. Like our president Sandy Allnock says, "Your card could be the last thing a Hero's family receives" What an honor and privilege to be a part of this organization
When I heard about Operation Write Home I thought I would just make a few cards to send to them. However, when I found their website was so full of ways to support our military, I became committed to their cause. Operation Write Home constantly strives to meet the needs of our heroes while at the same time providing moral support and encouragement. I appreciate that my donations to them help cover the cost of shipping a box of cards overseas to our hero's.
I started making cards for OWH after my son was on his first deployment, it helped keep the stress level down. He is home safely, but I still contribute cards to help other military families.
For the last couple of years I have been donating cards to Operation Write Home. This is just a small way to thank our Heroes for their sacrifices. I was even able to sign up my son's unit when he was deployed. I have also learn a number of new card techniques thanks to the very talented OWH card makers.
I have enjoyed making cards for OWH! What they do is phenomenal! The returning vets I have talked with have nothing but high praise for this program!!!
I am so happy to be a part of Operation Write Home. Every card I make for the troops, makes me feel just a little closer to them and gives me the feeling that I am helping at least one soldier stay in contact with family at home. The women who take care of sorting and mailing the cards are the best. They are always there for questions, always helping with new ideas and techniques and do it all because they want to not because they have too.
I am so happy I found this organization. I was making cards for friends and family, but there are only so many that I needed. I can now spread the joy and happiness from my cards to the soldiers who are defending our freedom and away from their families and friends. OWH has given me something to look forward to and to feel like I am, in a small way, helping our nation's bravest. I have told so many people about this organization.
I am a scrap-booker gone card-maker. When I first started making cards for OWH I'm sure they weren't very good. The more I watched OWH TV and read their blogs the more ideas I got for making my cards much better. I appreciate all the time that OWH goes into helping us volunteers keep our minds reeling with ideas and inspiration. When my husband was stationed in Spain (1990) it would've been so great to receive these cards instead of notes on yellow notebook paper ( which I still have).
I love to give back or "pay it forward". I cut and donate fleece scarves to the Salvation Army every year but that is only a winter time type of thing. OWH has given me the opportunity to give back year round! I had to retire 6 months ago to care for my husband and was finding myself at loose ends. My daughter got me into card making even though I told her I hated to make cards unless I had a reason for one. I now have a reason for each and every card I make!!!! I spend hours working on the cards and find so much joy in it! Not only does it give me something to keep my busy, it gives me a purpose and to be able to share that with our heros and their families means so much! Our troops give up big blocks of their lives away from their families. OWH cards gives them a chance to keep in touch with more than a plan piece of paper! Love making the cards, love knowing they have a purpose and love OWH!
I found this organization through a crafting challenge online. They are top notch and bring a lot of smiles to a lot of people. I get to paper craft, which I love. I'm learning new skills. My retired friends are enjoying card making parties with an activity they love. The cards that we make are going to deployed military and I think we put a smile on their face. They can then write home on our cards and bring special memories of them to their families. This is definitely a win, win, win, win.
I have found no better way to combine my love of paper crafting with a way to support the men & women stationed overseas. I can't imagine what they and their families go through, but am so thankful for the opportunity to make life even just a little bit nicer for them!
Operation Write Home supports its volunteers as much as we do deployed military with sketches, challenges, and camaraderie. They are a win-win for everyone involved!
When I retired, I wanted to volunteer my time and talent to a worthwhile organization. I actually located Operation Write Home in a paper crafting magazine, checked out the web site, and immediately went to work on making cards.
This nonprofit is exceptional in every way. Our leader, Sandy Allnock, keeps an awesome web site with guidelines, card ideas and tutorials, messages of thanks from the troops, challenges, and more. Her weekly live OWHtv presentation keeps all of us informed and inspired. What I particularly appreciate is Sandy's emphasis on QUALITY cards. Rather than throwing together 20 cards at one sitting, she encourages us to take our time, use quality products, and make beautiful, unique, special cards for our brave troops throughout the world. They deserve our best effort.
Sandy's the greatest and I am proud to be a small part of this great organization.
Our deployed military are doing their best for us and they deserve OUR best. I am proud of the veterans in my family (husband, father, father-in-law, many uncles). And I am proud and delighted to create beautiful greeting cards for our deployed heroes. OWH is filled with loving, caring volunteers and the bestest President ever, Sandy.
When my husband's son was deployed in Iraq, I would send his unit homemade cards from my rubber stamp group. When they returned, we didn't have anybody we knew to send cards to. With Operation Write Home, we don't have to know the "somebody"......We can make cards to our hearts' delight and know that there is someone appreciate of what we do. This gives us an outlet for our creativity, a deployed Hero the opportunity to send a card, and the recipient to receive something more tangible than an e-mail!
A very high percentage of donations is used to directly benefit our deployed military.
The organization provides a way for the general public to personally impact both military personnel and their families.
I receive far more than I give to OWH. The group is truly worthy of your time and talents.
I have learned SO much through the on line support, challenges, and tutorials. Our deployed military receive handcrafted cards to send home, and I get an outlet for my projects!! Win/win situation!!
I have been volunteering with Operation Write Home for nearly 4 years now. It is a wonderful way to serve our hero's who serve our country and also use my craft of card making. Our troops enjoy getting our cards to send to their family and loved ones, and we enjoy making them. It is a total volunteer organization. All funds for shipping the cards overseas are donated. I have met many wonderful people through this organization.
I have been making cards for Operation Write Home for about 2 1/2 yrs now. I love making cards and this is an outlet to send them to so that other people may enjoy them. It is very rewarding to hear the feedback of our heros and their families that the cards are so much appreciated. It's my little way to support our troops and the sacrifices that they make for our country.
OWH has provided my busy life an outlet to stop the hectic life for a little while and do something that is truly rewarding. I love making cards for my family and have learned to love it even more when I started making them for our deployed troops and their families! And thanks to OWH I have learned so much and continue learning and getting better with each card made. Thank OWH for all your hard work!!
Absolutely one of the finest organizations supporting our military who are deployed. Many awesome folks from the President through the shippers, cardmakers and board members. It is an honor to know these people.
I absolutely LOVE Operation Write Home (OWH). It is one of the most rewarding experiences that I have ever had. Volunteer cardmakers create blank masterpiece cards to send out to the troops, who send them back with notes to their loved ones and friends. I "met" the president of OWH online on a troop support site and she invited me in. I have had the opportunity to learn and grow as a cardmaker, in part by seeing the lovely contributions of other cardmakers, and in part through the tutorials that OWH has made to assist us. Reading the messages sent to OWH from the families who receive these cards from their loved ones is the BEST, especially the impact it has on their children and spouses!! And there is no prssure. You can create one card or a hundred, because we want each one to be truly worthy of our heroes. Folks who don't have that creative mindset can easily participate as well by sending donations for the postage to ship cards and by writing "hero letters" to the troops thanking them for their service (hero letters are enclosed in every box of cards that are shipped)! This organization creates a WIN (cardmakers. letter writers and donors), WIN (deployed service members who so want to stay in touch with folks back home), WIN (the familiy and friends receiving these cards) atmosphere and it doesn't get any better than that!
