I had just become Superintendent of Schools in Indianapolis and our board and I were faced with low student achievement in many of the schools. The National Urban Alliance (NUA) partnered with us, audited each school to look at instructional issues, designed a staff development plan for the district and implemented it. Not only did they signficantly help us raise student achievement, they also worked with us to find grant opportunites to help fund the partnership. There is no question that the National Urban Alliance makes a difference for all children and proves that poverty is not destiny.
The National Urban Alliance for Effective Education provides teachers with real and effective strategies to reach each every student in their classroom. The focus is on building student competence and confidence through strategies that give students voice in their learning and cognition. They have helped us make gains in closing the achievement gap.
The National Urban Alliance for Effective Education’s fundamental belief is that all children can learn. This alliance uses research-based methods to unlock the potential in all children by focusing on the their strengths. Through hands-on professional learning with teachers and students, NUA mentors teach and model the Pedagogy of Confidence by applying effective instructional strategies that promote high intellectual performances. In addition to promoting high intellectual performances, the professional learning incorporates social and cultural aspects as well. Teachers and students begin to utilize culturally responsive teaching as a way to master the course content and ultimately empower students and teachers to become lifelong learners. This dynamic alliance understands how to apply theories and weave them seamlessly into the mandated curriculum. Not only do the strategies work in the K-12 system, but they also work well in teacher preparation programs. The National Urban Alliance is needed throughout the country in order to eradicate the proverbial gap that has long plagued our educational system.
National Urban Alliance provided effective instructional strategies for teachers. The teachers were given tools such as community builders, thinking maps and culturally relevant pedagogy. The work with NUA inspired teachers and students. We loved our coach. NUA helped to deepen the teaching and learning for those teachers involved. The leadership component for the administrators also helped to guide the strategies throughout the school
We have been in partnership with the National Urban Alliance at our school for seven years, and the benefits have been tremendous. I can't think of a partnership that has been more fruitful for our students and staff. The professional development offered through NUA has resulted in long-lasting and fundamental changes in teachers' practice at our school, which is not the case with all professional development experiences. National Urban Alliance for Effective Education is a fantastic organization that truly believes all students can reach their maximum potential on each of the following levels: academic, personal/social, and career. The organization promotes the use of effective instructional delivery and classroom practices that enable teachers to meet the needs of students across various cultures. Through a hands-on, continuous, research-based approach, National Urban Alliance spends time in the schools working collaboratively with classroom educators, students, and administrators to unlock the high intellectual performance all students have within them. I have seen students labeled as emotional disturbed and learning disabled go from a constant classroom disruption to being able to tell you which of the Thinking Maps should be used to explain the cause and effect of substances combined that produce a chemical reaction. Students have even led classroom instruction after collaborating with their teachers to develop a lesson. The keys to the success National Urban Alliance has experienced in the districts that have worked with the organization are the on-going, adult learning theory based support provided within the schools and district, the relevant, research-based professional development provided to staff and students, which is based on the unique characteristics of the students within each school, and the high level of commitment among the mentors with expertise in the field of education that deliver these services.
