Mission: Mickaboo was founded in 1996. Our mission is very simple: To provide protection for those who, by no fault or choice of their own cannot help themselves, and depend on humans for their care.
To ensure the highest quality of life for our companion birds.
To educate the bird owning public on the most current diet, health and general care information.
Target demographics: companion parrots who have been neglected or surrendered to us
Geographic areas served: Northern California, from the San Francisco Bay Area up to the Sacramento area.
Programs: Mickaboo holds free, regularly scheduled bird education classes throughout the Bay Area. At the classes, we talk about proper avian diet and care, symptoms of illness, emergency first aid, the importance of vet care, general husbandry, taming and training, and dangers in the home. Mickaboo also offers special advanced bird care classes and seminars on topics such as foraging. Mickaboo also holds adoption fairs throughout the year, where the general public has a chance to come meet some of our wonderful birds.
Learning about Mickaboo's existence was an incredible relief to me. I have had my Severe Macaw Kaiya for 24 years. I have also had serious health issues. It had crossed my mind, if something happened to me, my parrot could be in need of a new home. It was a heart wrenching thought as parrots are incredibly intelligent and not easily cared for. Thankfully, my children are older now and have developed a good relationship with Kaiya. And Mickaboo is another safety net. Since learning about Mickaboo, I have become a volunteer and parrot advocate and educator. I started a business and fundraising project called Art For The Birds - Cruelty Free Feather Jewelry. I receive feathers from other Mickaboo supporters, volunteers, foster families and adopters. I make the feather jewelry, educate my customers about Mickaboo and Parrots and give Mickaboo 25% of my profits. As an all volunteer organization, Mickaboo does an incredible job to rescue parrots and other companion birds, care for them and find them new homes. I am very proud to be part of the organization.
