I was in the process of adopting a puppy so my dog could have a playmate and when it came time the foster just sopt communication so when I reached out to the company to see what was going on I guess that was a problem because all of a sudden the foster reaches out to say the puppy has become aggressive and is not adoptable but 2 days later she is posted on the website to be adopted so I applied for 2 other puppies just to be blacklisted and told all these excuses of why I can't adopt now and I feel like if it was a issue it should have been addressed the 1st home visit not come back twice and the last visit say you are coming back with the paperwork and then lie I also feel me being a POC played a role as well this is not the 1st time thus had happened and I also feel the foster does not need to be one she came both visits and had dohs left in the car for over a hour but yall found all types of excuses why I could not adopt very disappointed if I could give NO STARS I would

I feel like I was deceived. The 8 year old dog I adopted is not house trained. The woman made some vague, generalized comment about her 8 dogs and going to the bathroom in her house. She did not say, "This dog is not house trained." Which, of course would have been an absolute deal breaker.

We submitted an application for a specific dog and about a week later received a text from his foster to schedule a time that she could bring him to our home. It was a great fit and she had everything we needed to take over as owners and so we only had to sign some forms for him to immediately become ours. Their descriptions of the dogs are incredibly accurate and they spend time preparing the rescues to join a new household by crate training, walking, and teaching them how to use doggie doors. Will definitely get all my future companions from Lapdog Rescue!

We first had the pleasure of working with Lap Dog Rescue New Mexico in January of 2019 when we adopted our first senior fluff, Petey Pasta. I remember starting to cry the moment I laid eyes on this beautiful senior boy the moment I opened the front door. Even my husband got emotional, which is no small feat. Since then, we have adopted 5 more seniors, (Nala, Booster, Luigi, Jewel, and Sweets), and every experience with Brian Spence and the Lap Dog Rescue fosters has been nothing short of perfect. Most of our fluffs came from pretty awful situations before being rescued and we are thankful everyday that the LDRNM team put them in our path to let them live out their golden years. Four of our furry loves have since crossed the rainbow but that is the reality when adopting seniors, you're on borrowed time. I have never regretted adopting a senior, (though puppies are awesome too), knowing that LDRNM saved these fluffs and has trusted us with them, has made every second worth it.
If you are in search of your forever friend, puppy, senior, or in-between, I urge you to reach out to LDRNM. If you aren't ready to adopt, I encourage you to support them and their mission in any other way, you won't regret it.

Our first experience with Lap Dog Rescue of New Mexico was about 8 years ago, when we were looking for a friend for our labradoodle. We attended a Lap Dog Rescue of New Mexico event and this little Maltese was standing on her back legs as if to be saying "Pick me! Pick me!" We did and we named her Gidget and she has been with us ever since. The labradoodle died a few years ago, and recently we decided we wanted a friend for Gidget. We went to the Lap Dog Facebook page and found Maddie, a little Yorkie. We since have adopted Maddie and she has stolen our hearts. We have been so blessed by having these 2 dogs in our lives and are eternally grateful to Lap Dog Rescue of New Mexico for bringing these dogs into our lives.

Lap Dog Rescue of New Mexico is a wonderful organization that works hard to care for animals, and then match them with an owner who will take care of them the rest of their lives. This business truly cares about the well being of their pups, and they take the time to truly make sure the adopter is fit to bring the pup into a lifetime home. My experience with them started when I was 9 years old in 2010 when my Mom and I adopted a little black female terrier named Brad (we later changed her name to Brinkley), then again in 2012 we adopted a little terrier mix from them named Mikey. Both are older now and have been great lifetime pets! Most recently back in 2022 I decided to adopt a wonderful dog named Patches from Brian. Patches is currently 13 months old now, and she has added so much to my life. She is a larger dog, and she has become my companion, and I am so grateful to have her. I truly am impressed by this organization, and everything they do to make sure the pet “kids” are taken care of and have a wonderful life. I would definitely recommend this organization if anyone wants to help foster a pet or add a furry companion to their family.

I adopted my Pepper from Lap Dog. She was part of a hoarding case and didn’t know how to go up or down a step or walk on grass. She would fall over. She became the happiest dog who played and loved her family. I can’t count how many Lap dogs I have met and know because my BFF grooms and fosters them. They are all special and have varying stories. They are all so loved and Lap Dog helps them live their best lives.

Ever since we adopted our dog 8 years ago we have seen Lapdog Rescue find homes for thousands of small dogs and puppies (even those who won't be lap sized), get emergency medical help for strays, and sponsor spay and neuter clinics. I have seen them rehome dogs when elderly people can no longer care for them. Lapdog Rescue builds a community of caring and I am a proud dog parent and contributor to them.

Seven years ago we adopted our dog Iko from Lap Dog Rescue. He was a little bit bigger then a regular lapdog but they wouldn't leave this sickly puppy behind. He has grown into the joy of our home. Over the years I have watched Lap Dog Rescue save, nurse to health, and find good homes for hundreds of dogs. They are supporting animals in need in our community and organizations in communities around New Mexico. They are truly a great nonprofit.

We learned about Lap Dog Rescue from several different neighbors who are involved in the organization and others who have adopted from LDR. We got our beloved Autumn from them 10 years ago and have followed their activity closely ever since. Everyone involved is devoted to the countless dogs they rescue. We know from experience that they carefully match people and dogs. Many of us have adopted more than one from LDR.

I have adopted two dogs from Lapdog Rescue. I am now a foster for their rescue as well. New Mexico has a serious problem with dog over population. Some of these tiny little guys are in the shelters, scared and alone, or worse. My first dog from Lapdog, Nardo (short for Leonardo) came to them when he was only about a month old from a rural shelter. They were going to euthanize him because of his age (too small to survive on his own) and a severely injured eye. This purebred Pekingese was a result of irresponsible dog owners, and Lapdog stepped in to save the day! They removed his eye and fostered him for a whole year until they found a home experienced with Pekingese (me). Not only did they save his life, but they made sure he wound up in a home where he wouldn’t ever be mistreated or abandoned again. Nardo was my special little guy! He lived to be 14 years old. I am so glad I can continue to support lapdog and all the wonderful things they do for our community.

Over the past 10 years, we have adopted 4 dogs from Lap Dog Rescue of NM. Each time they make sure the dog is the right fit for our home and that our home is the right fit for the dog. They insist that if for some rare reason it does not work out, they want the dog back so they can find it the right home. They offer encouragement, advice and support and they partner with many organizations to help out pets needing rescuing.
They look for ways to offer free neutering and will travel to provide these services. They have great vet partners, but can always use more fosters and donations. We love LDR of NM!

I was looking for a small dog in early 2019 to be a companion for my other rescue dog while I was at work. I saw a Lap Dog listing for a brown and white Chihuahua. The photograph captured something special about this little dog, and the description of her was honest and clear. I have never considered myself a Chihuahua person, but I could not stop thinking about her. She came out of a hoard of over 30 small dogs in a trailer in northern New Mexico and was lovingly and patiently brought out of her shell by a Lap Dog foster who had her for 5 months.

I applied and the foster brought her up to my house for a weekend trial. She was tiny and shy and had a mouthful of crazy Chihuahua teeth. Within 8 hours we were all madly in love with one another and she is, without question, one of the best dogs I have ever had. She is a magical and powerful creature - intuitive, full of love and an adventurous spirit. She is on the left in the attached photo.

There was good follow-up with the foster and the entire experience was top notch. The work Lap Dog does is vital here in New Mexico and they have made many people and dogs very happy.

They are very caring about the dogs who come in to them, try to place the dog in the best foster home for them, them search for the best home once all the vetting is done. Many adopters come back again and adopt again. Kudos to this group, administrators, fosters who care for, train, love, stay up for long nights, and the vets who get the pups ready medically for their “furever” home.

We were most impressed with how thorough they are at making sure the family is a good fit, so dogs are very rarely returned.

Nya has been through lots of training, and now she's a certified therapy dog, with special work visiting kids in schools. She also really enjoys hiking and snuggles. We found the perfect dog, thanks to LDRNM!

I have two rescue dogs, and the latest one came 5 years ago from Lap Dog Rescue of New Mexico. He was turned into the dog pound in Roswell, NM, which is notorious for impatience to euthanize their guests. Lap Dog got my dog Itchy from there, when his original owner turned him in. He was missing an eye, which she "had no idea how that happened." (She had 5 kids and 4 dogs...) Is he a perfect pet? No, but he tries! Lap Dog is such a good organization -- they are able to place homeless pets with fosters, and eventually with permanent homes and loving owners.

We adopted our Maggie-Lou from Lap Dog Rescue NM in January of 2019. They and their volunteers did a great job of answering my questions and connecting us with Maggie. They even networked us in with a group of nice people who walk their dogs at Cottonwood Mall on Wednesdays so we could get Maggie socialized a little better. Even when I needed follow up medical information a year after adoption, I had one of the Lapdog staff return my calls quickly. I recommend LDRNM to anyone wanting to bring more love into their lives.

Why is Lap Dog Rescue is the best, I will tell you why. You just don't go to one of their adoption events and pick a dog to take it home the same day. You first must be vetted that you are able to take care of your new pet. They actually will come to your home to make sure the home is safe for the pet, and if you have other pets, they make sure the pets will interact with each other. An interview is conducted to make sure you understand the requirements of taking in a new family member that includes vet visits, spade/neutering, training, and long term care.

Before any dog is placed up for adoption, all dogs are taken to a vet to be examined and given a physical to see if there are any issues. If there are any issues, Lap Dog Rescue will make arrangements to have any health concerns corrected. They ensure that all dogs are chipped, receive their first shots, and give you plan for remaining shots and if need be, time to have your pet to be spade or neutered.

Lap Dog Rescue definitely cares for pets. All fosters are also vetted and go through a thorough inspection and investigation before you can become a foster. They want to be sure that a future foster family is not going to abuse the pet or be used as a bait dog.

I recommend Lap Dog Rescue for your next new family member, we did and will use them again.

He’s such a wonderful, funny little boy! We have a bigger dog ( who’s also a rescue and a perfect angel). We also have three kids . Lapdog Rescue is amazing. I cannot express the gratitude and respect I have for this company. Over the past 8 years I have adopted 3 fur kids, and many friends have also done the same. The time and energy and selfless hours put into providing forever/loving/safe homes for these fur babies is beyond words. Once adopted Lapdog doesn't stop there. If you have any questions or need help their door is always open. If a fur baby has been lost, Lapdog goes out of its way to make posts on social media to help find said Lapdog fur baby. One of ours was lost for a few days. They also do courtesy posts of other fur kids in need of forever homes or that have been lost. I am so great-full to have been given the blessing to adopt my fur kids. Lapdog Rescue makes a difference each day that is beyond measure. Lapdog Rescue also deals with the heartache that many turn a cheek too. ❤️

Lapdog Rescue rescued my family on January 16, 2013. We had to lay to rest our beloved dog, Oxford on November 4, 2012 due to cancer. We were heartbroken. A good friend referred me to Brian with LapDog Rescue. Brian brought over this mutt named Jasper who barked and barked at me. You see Brian was his person at the time. After being rescued from a very high kill shelter so of course Jasper was nervous. That night I was certain that Jasper would want to sleep in his kennel but wasn’t having it. He slept on our bed, on our sons bed, on the sofa, and well he settled right in. We believe he is 12 now and continues to bless our family. Then we were delighted with Fifi 2 years later, sadly she had a stroke 2 years ago. We also have Bonnie and she rules the roost.. all 5lbs of her. We have many friends who have also adopted from LapDog. I am so impressed with LapDog Rescue. They truly go out of their way to help and aid so many dogs in a state that is inundated with homeless and sick pets.

This sweet boo is Evie. My husband and I adopted her in the summer of 2016 after we had lost one of our beloved pups. Evie, who was known as Lilly at the time, had recently lost her person and with nobody to take her, she was left at a vet where she was found by a LDRNM partner.
Evie was a senior when we adopted her, and we soon learned a lot about her. She was mute, and she didn’t do great with the stairs/jumping due to an old injury. I’d have to carry her up and down the stairs, which I never minded. Though she wasn’t a highly adventurous dog, she loved going down to the water when we’d go to the lake, and enjoyed being out for walks with her “brothers” (we had a stroller for Evie). Evie’s favorite place in our home was her dog bed; eventually I’d bring her up in the bed to sleep at night because that’s where she likes to be the most. My favorite thing about her was her joyous “buck” she would do when I would come home; she would excitedly be run around the house to greet me. It was the cutest.
We lost Evie on May 21 this year. As much as we would have loved more time with her, it comes with the territory of adopting a senior. I am glad she had a life full of love in her last years, and I am so grateful that Lap Dog Rescue brought such a special girl into our lives.

Both dogs take thier job of "lap dog" very seriously, and if there happens to be an empty lap, it is immediately taken care of with a determined dog. Hello!
My name is Laura and I am the happy mama to two NM Lap Dog rescue babies. They are not my pets; they are my family.

September 29th 2017 I lost my family member of 14 years. My dearest Chihuahua companion, Ceraquahui, was/is irreplaceable. I was not sure I was ready to explore a new baby.

I went to a NM Lap Dog fair at Osuna Nursery October 2017 and met Charlotte. She joined me at home and we became inseparable. I soon realized how much I needed her companionship. Within 2 months we met Tiller and he come into our home as our little brother.

These creatures are polar opposites with Tiller being a real guy's guy and Char being the penultimate lady. But they scrap and love one another, as I do them. I never thought I could be more than a one dog woman, but they have shown me the way.

Forever Grateful for NM Lap Dog, Charlotte and Tiller and each day we share.

Lap Dog Rescue came through with a wonderful companion. They are completely bonded. They bring give us love, laughter, and close companionship. Over the past 15 years or so we’ve adopted five rescued dachshunds from Lap Dog Rescue who all became integral members of our family. Each one of these precious little dogs have unique personalities and are simply fountains of love. The real advantage of adopting rescue dogs from LDR is that the foster folks who house them while they await their forever home, socialize them, get to know each dogs quirks, needs and personality, and can help you choose just the right dog for your home. Our LDR rescue posse are a never ending stream of love and endearing entertainment. The first picture is of our remaining four dachshund posse; second picture is of the first two LDR rescues (blue collared one has passed on); and the last picture is of our first two dachshunds, both deceased (not LDR rescues). I was interested in adopting a pet for my husband. He is a truck driver and could use a companion while working away from home. I filled out their request form and within 24 hours got a NO response. It had two sentences, "The foster mom does not feel that the dog would fit this lifestyle. He needs a yard, a companion and training."

I have adopted dogs from other organizations. I was always contacted with more questions, this allowed them to find the best dog for me and allowed me to react to their concerns. This organization just told me that the dog I had put on the application would not fit. They did not offer substitutions.

I did write back, stating the both my husband and I would exercise the dog 2 hours a day with walks and play, we had both trained dogs in the past for search and rescue and would have no problems teaching this dog and as for a friend, well meet and greets would be all he got.

Never once did they offer alternative dogs. If you don't have a traditional family with a yard. Don't bother applying.

How do you mend a broken heart? Lapdog Rescue of NM has the best medicine for a broken heart! Within 48 hours of applying, we had experienced a home visit and our dear Beau was delivered! It was indeed a miracle! One week after losing Lilly Belle’s 3 month old puppy (the one we kept for her…really ourselves), we were not on the road to recovery…the house was QUIET, Lilly Belle was obsessed with us, and there was no more puppy play.
With broken hearts, how could we face a visit to the shelter where we would see so many needy pups and stress about how to choose one? Normally brave, but overwhelmed with sadness, suddenly Facebook revealed that a dear friend “liked” Lapdog Rescue of NM…that was at 8pm Wednesday evening. A message was sent that night, the online application submitted by 10am next morning, home visit same day, Beau brought by Brian, the President of Lapdog Rescue of NM the next afternoon! We had anticipated attending the adoption event that Saturday, but it turned out that since we “loved” the picture of Beau, and passed the reference check and home inspection visit, we didn’t need to go to the event (and Brian said that it was easier on the puppy not to have to attend).
Discovery of Lapdog Rescue of NM was exceptional treatment for our broken-hearts! It was amazing to learn that they follow specific enlightened precepts developed by Brian’s mother, who founded the organization more than 20 years ago. These precepts include:
1. All rescues are fostered in homes by experienced foster families (our Beau was bottle fed from birth!).
2. Socialization (people, other dogs, cats, potty-training) is an important part of preparing Lapdogs for adoption.
3. Home inspection visits are required.
4. References are required.
5. Lapdogs come with a package of information specific to their history and needs.
6. All shots, chipping and neuter/spay costs are included in the fee.
7. Advice about the correct food is clear and directive (we changed to a recommended food from one that has been associated with serious side-effects).
Lapdog Rescue of New Mexico rescued our puppy, and importantly they rescued us!
Today is Valentine’s Day – one month ago Brian brought a 5 month old Chihuahua puppy named Beau (bottle fed since birth!!) into our home and now our hearts are on the mend. We are so grateful and know that this organization will continue to serve our community with the high standards and goals that produce the best and most heart-felt love-matches! Thank you to Brian and his mother, all the foster-families and to those that are adopting from Lapdog Rescue of New Mexico!

I've been an animal person all my life, then a Vet Tech, then Pet Sitter.
We've always had rescue animals, they are the best...

When I suddenly lost my dog to an unexplained illness I needed a new one STAT to help my medical issues, just having a dog next to me helped more than I really knew.

Knowing dogs like I do I didn't want just any rescue this time around, I wanted one that had a story and who's human helpers knew and and had been vetted.

Lap Dog Rescue of NM is to date the only rescue I personally know of who tests for heartworm, does fecal testing, even erlichia testing, along with spay/neuter, and routine vaccinations before they put them up for adoption.

Then they add is socializing and doggy door training to boot, sometimes more.

I got a great dog that everyone knew of and loved.

She fits in with me and my family perfectly.

I was so happy with the entire situation, I'm now volunteering for them, it's an inspiring group of people!!!

Our dog Loki came from LDRNM. They had a fairly rigorous application and home visit protocol, which I appreciated, both to make sure that we were right for Loki and that he was right for us. Brian did a full inspection of our house and yard, made sure that our other dogs were not going to be aggressive to Loki, and gave us some guidance and info about Loki and how to acclimate him to his new home. I have encountered so many people who have gotten wonderful dogs thru LDRNM. They do very good work and I will get any future dogs thru them and recommend them to anyone I know!

I am proud and happy to have as part of my family two little dogs from LDRNM. I know first-hand just how special the volunteers are. They will eagerly go the extra mile--and much more--to rescue, foster, socialize and place dogs in forever homes. One of my dogs was found in 2011 running wild with a gang of much bigger dogs, while the other came from a notorious puppy mill in 2009. I am incredibly grateful to LDRNM for Cisco (FKA Cecil the Diesel) and Chaco (FKA Special Eddie), who bring joy into my life every day.

Lap Dog does a tremendous amount of good with a small budget and a group of volunteers with giant hearts. We adopted one of our rescue dogs from them, and they required a home visit to make sure the dog was going to a good home. We know several of the volunteers, who always have dog treats and leashes in their vehicles in case they see a pup in need on the side of the road. Lap Dog is well-organized and dedicated. They are also transparent; I reviewed their IRS form 990 online and was amazed at how much they accomplish with a limited budget.

He was a stray and was in foster care for a few months. He adapted well. What I liked was that they inspect the home and yard and bring the dog for a visit. Then u decide if it's a good match. They also tell u if for any reason you need to give them up that they will take them back into foster care to find a for ever home. I recommend them to all my friends and clients.

In November we lost our baby Sparky to an unexpected death. That is when we decided to try Lap Dog Rescue. We adopted Oliver (Maltese) that had been with them for a very short time. I was immediately impressed with Lap Dog and the screening process. They don't just adopt dogs out, just for the sake of getting them into a home. Immediately when a dog goes into their program, they are fostered in a home. I have to say this is so beneficial. These homeless dogs immediately learn potty training, and basically how to succeed in a home. I will always be grateful to Lap Dog for Oliver. Over the last fifteen years, I have adopted 4 dogs from this nonprofit organization. After losing two of them to old age in recent years, I asked their assistance to find a new pet. I adopted not one, but two puppies, sisters that I didn't want to separate from each other. They, and the pets adopted in previous years, have been cherished members of my family. I also have fostered a few until they were placed by the organization in appropriate homes. It is their practice to give whatever medical care may be necessary, including spaying/neutering, vaccinations and dental care before the pet is offered for adoption, as well as visiting the potential home first, in order to insure success for the pet and new owners. The organization is comprised of people who truly care about the welfare of animals, including volunteers in the community who foster dogs in their homes until they are adopted and go to their forever homes.

Lap Dog Rescue has the most terrific fosters, which helps these adoptables adjust from whatever they've been through before being rescued. LDR makes sure all potential families are fully vetted before they can adopt and home visit them to make sure gates and fences are secure.

I am a person who suffers from depression, some days worse then others. One of my employers kept insisting I should get a dog for company as I have no family here. After a bit I started looking around and found lapdog rescue and I am so happy I did! I found my Taffy and Taco. mom and son and I love them dearly. Taffy - my pom- I think has some cat in her somewhere, Taco - pom-chi, has the the cutest little strut. having them to take care of gives me something to look forward to daily. they are a comfort, full of love and know when I am not feeling all the wall as they kind of surround me and we just hang out and play and talk to each other, or growl and wrestle. lol. Lap Dog Rescue made adopting them easy and painless, they were helpful with any questions I had, and are just really good people. When we went to pick up my kids, the foster home took care of 11 little ones and the one thing I noticed first was that everyone of them were happy. You could tell which had had a harder time of it because they came for extra attention and it was given to them. You can always tell when an abuse being whether animal or human feels secure and safe. They all knew they were safe, secure and well loved.

Lapdog rescue is very close and dear to our hearts for many reasons. When my husband and I were considering another dog, we wanted to find one that really needed a home. After looking at various rescues we saw a picture of Nardo. He looked so sweet with his one big beautiful eye. He had been abandoned at four weeks old at a high kill shelter with a very damaged eye. His chances for survival and for adoption were not good. Lapdog took him in and gave him a chance. They removed his damaged eye and worked tirelessly to find him a good home. They had him for a whole year before we found each other. I had already had experience with a pekingese before, and our other dogs just loved Nardo when they Lapdog came out to make sure our home was a good home for Nardo.
Later on, when Nardo had issues with his front legs, and had to have a very expensive surgery to fuse his ankle so he could walk, Lapdog helped us out with the expense! They even helped with our fundraiser for him. They are the most wonderful rescue I have ever had the pleasure of being in touch with. I don't know what all these poor little souls would do without them. Nardo was not an easy dog to deal with or place, but they gave him his best chance, and his is such a wonderful little love. Thank you, Lapdog, for saving our little Nardo, and for all the amazing work you do!

Lap dog rescue is simply amazing. I adopted my baby Josh from them for three reasons. To give my other boy a brother, to have another companion, and most importantly... Save a sweet animal. He has been such an asset to the family. I truly appreciated his foster mom visiting us multiple times to make sure he was getting a loving and safe home. It is so important that those visits and precautions are made. His first weeks were rough as he was scared and sad. He has now been with us for three years and is so happy and full of life playing with his brother all day and sleeping in a king bed! He also enjoys family vacations! Please support this organization. They are caring compassionate people and I am indebted to them forever for giving us my sweet boy!

I adopted a dog from Lap Dog Rescue a year ago who had been rescued from our high kill pound. He is the sweetest, little bitty dog, who fit into our family of 3 dogs perfectly. They save dogs from all over the state from high kill pounds. I gather blankets, towels and newspapers and give them a call, and Barb comes and gets them. I have also made several dog beds for them to use or sell, whatever fits their needs. They are a wonderful organization saving and adopting dogs into their furever homes. Anything said is totally positive about this group.

I can’t say enough wonderful things about Lap Dog Rescue of New Mexico. I adopted my Lula girl from Lap Dog Rescue in June of 2012. She was rescued by Lap Dog from the Valencia County pound, who had her on the list to be euthanized because she is deaf and was a stray. Thank goodness for the loving hearts at Lap Dog Rescue – they saved my girl. She is such a loving, precious soul that deserved a chance, just like all of the dogs out there deserve. Lap Dog Rescue will go to the ends of the Earth to help a dog in need. They save dogs from the pound, take in dogs that owners surrender, and they do it with such love and compassion. They give hope where others just walk away. I will always and forever be a supporter of Lap Dog Rescue.
