Mission: The mission of KVIE, Inc. is to educate, enrich, enlighten and inspire diverse audiences and individuals through high quality television programming and related services that enhance the quality of life for people in the communities we serve.
Programs: Broadcasting from california's capital, kvie public television is a valuable part of the 16-county sacramento-stockton-modesto television market and also serves viewers in 28 of the state's 58 counties. Kvie provides educational programming and services through television, online, and live engagement screenings and events. As a pbs station, kvie's national and local productions work together to engage the mind and spirit to promote personal and community growth. As the only locally owned and managed television station in the 20th largest television market in the united states, kvie reflects the community back to itself by creating and presenting programs about its past, present and future, providing a springboard for engagement, discussion and life-long learning. Kvie expanded its productions to include more key local services, including new local programs in the areas of arts, education, environment, local history, health, civic issues, and regional lifestyle. Through new and engaging content, kvie's online audiences grew on kvie. Org, kviekids. Org, and americasheartland. Org. Kvie also continued to work on strengthening its financial position. Kvie continued education and outreach work to serve families, students, and educators. Kvie local services deeply impacted the greater sacramento region. The youngest viewers learned their abc's and 123's through the unique combination of the station's on-air programming for preschoolers and free curriculum provided to community organizations that serve them directly. Recently transplanted residents learned the rich history of their new community through kvie programming, both on-air and online. And longtime residents explored more in-depth issues that impact everyone. Key local services in 2015 included more than 50 new programs featuring our region's arts, celebrating local attractions, and delving into pressing regional issues like education and the environment, history, health and more. Kvie's locally produced and longest running original program america's heartland, which airs on pbs stations and various other channels across the country and around the world, celebrated its tenth season. Other local productions within the viewfinder series, rob on the road, yes we're open, kvie arts showcase, and studio sacramento highlighted the people, places, and issues of our region. National public television favorites like masterpiece, nova, california's gold, great performances, nature and frontline delivered an array of ideas and adventures to our citizens, all for free. Our emmy award winning studio sacramento continued its weekly focus on topics, issues and people of local interest to viewers in our region. The 26 new episodes produced in the fourth season provided insight into education, government and politics, business, economics, arts, entertainment, health, science, agriculture, and social issues. Topics covered this season: causes and consequences of youth homelessness, understanding common core education standards, healthy food for all communities, millennials in the workplace, redefining the guidelines for cancer research and treatments, professional, personal and civic leadership, the baby boom generation retires, and professional sports in sacramento. Profiles of people: helene dillard, dean of the college of agricultural and environmental sciences at uc davis father and son developers larry and denton kelley, retired deputy commissioner ramona prieto of the california highway patrol, dr. Parnell lovelace - center of praise ministries dr. Sanjay varshney, former sacramento state business school dean elk grove mayor gary davis and co-owner of freeport bakery marlene goetzeler. Our locally produced series, yes we're open, profiled some of our region's most industrious entrepreneurs sharing their secrets of success as they launched a wide array of enterprises, from family-owned eateries to high-tech startups. In episodes this season, we met a stockton couple hoping to bring their laser tag business back to life, discovered a mexican-american family's passion for winemaking, and heard the story behind one of the area's most popular restaurants. America's heartland, our locally produced national series about agriculture, brought viewers 22 new episodes with stories from across the nation. During its tenth consecutive season, the series took viewers across the country with colorful stories including a local entrepreneur creating a new vodka brand from potatoes how climate change is challenging farmers in california, wisconsin, maine and nationwide and, a story about an illinois restaurateur helping to restore bee populations by starting apiaries on a hotel rooftop. We also joined a northern california ranching family on their yearly fall cattle drive, and learned about the challenges of modern farming, including transitioning the operation to the next generation upon the retirement of the family patriarch. In another regular heartland feature, farm to fork, our celebrity chef and food expert utilized a variety of ingredients fresh from the farm to prepare delicious meals. The america's heartland combined video viewing for website and youtube was 2. 5 million views for fy 2015. Rob on the road, our weekly series hosted by rob stewart, focusing on the most amazing people and places in northern california, offered viewers 6 new full half-hours. Highlights included an in-depth exploration of the vast sacramento delta, discovering examples of franklin delano roosevelt's legacy in northern california, a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at heart castle and ranch and crocker art museum, and a deep dive into old west history in sacramento's old town. Our original viewfinder series took viewers on 10 new in-depth journeys across a wide range of topics. Kvie's focus on health initiative enabled citizens to learn about advances in medicine and health. Fading away: alzheimer's explored this tragic and growing disease and its impact on families throughout northern california and beyond. We discovered the latest leading-edge research and efforts to find treatments and a cure. Another original health documentary, a path to healing: genomics and disease prevention, focused on how advances in dna mapping are allowing for individualized precision medicine. We examined new research and treatments that may finally presage real progress for those battling cancer and other diseases. Both programs were distributed to other pbs stations for broadcast across the u. S. Other kvie viewfinder programs provided in-depth looks at the history of italian-americans in california, how chinese workers helped build the transcontinental railroad, efforts to combat sexual assault on california college campuses, and archeological discoveries linking chinese pottery, a 19th century shipwreck, and northern california native american tribes. Inside california education traveled the state to discover the latest challenges, opportunities, innovative programs, and top teachers impacting california's public schools. Premiere events at kvie and kqed in san francisco brought together hundreds of enthusiastic supporters of california education, and the program was offered to and seen on pbs stations throughout the state. Kvie's studios hosted numerous events that brought people together in our communities. One event featured the premiere of fading away, and included program participants, medical experts, and other stakeholders to meet the producers and experience an informative panel discussion about alzheimer's. Kvie also produced and hosted the bera/ose debate, a live kvie studio debate featuring republican doug ose and democrat ami bera, candidates for one of the most hotly-contested congressional races in the u. S. , produced in partnership with the sacramento bee, capitol public radio, los rios community college district, folsom lake college and the sacramento state center for california studies. The program also aired on c-span and was widely covered by the national media. Kvie played host to our region's small business community during a special business reception and screening of our newest episode of yes we're open where small business owners featured in the episode were able to network and connect with other members of the business community in a way that is often not accessible for smaller companies in the region. Kvie's annual art auction preview gala attracted 625 guests and celebrated the diverse talent of the artists within our region.
as an educational broadcaster, kvie is known for its pbs kids offerings like sesame street and dinosaur train, presenting 4,554 hours of educational children's programming in english and spanish. But the kvie mission extends far beyond the airwaves to serving children, especially those most at risk, through direct services. With so many disadvantaged children in the region and california among the worst performers in student reading achievement, an early boost is crucially important for a child's future. Kvie addresses this urgent need through its ready to learn grassroots literacy program-an ambitious, region-wide initiative that builds literacy skills among children from low-income and underserved backgrounds. Every day, children across our part of california embark on amazing adventures and make new discoveries through pbs kids programs on kvie. We are committed to our region's children through an array of grassroots outreach services aimed at enhancing the quality of educational opportunities for every child in our viewing area. In 2015, more than 10,000 children and families benefitted from 109 free literacy workshops. These interactive workshops, designed for parents, caregivers, and educators of disadvantaged preschool and school-age children, utilized trusted pbs and kvie resources to guide them in fostering core skills necessary for school readiness and academic success. Through kvie's literacy program activities, kvie educators and community partners distributed 6,842 children's books across the region, bringing the joy of reading into the homes of thousands of children. Kvie reached thousands of families and viewers through eight literacy projects and outreach events, five of those in partnership with other community organizations. Within the 16-county sacramento-stockton-modesto television market, more than a half-million people each week, young and old alike, took a journey into a world of ideas, arts and adventure with kvie. Families explored our world on nature and nova. Arts lovers enjoyed the world's best performances on great performances and masterpiece. Children laughed and learned with sesame street and new favorites like peg + cat. And everyone discovered more about our community through our unique brand of local story telling with rob on the road, studio sacramento, viewfinder and america's heartland.
