Nonprofit Overview

Mission: Kids in a New Groove (K.I.N.G.) is a 501c3 non-profit that provides private music instruction to kids in the Texas foster care system by matching them with qualified music instructors.

Results: Many people involved in our students' day to day life have seen a vast improvement in life skills once a student becomes involved with our program. School teachers, therapists, and foster parents have noticed the increase in self-esteem and confidence our students exhibit, as well as a willingness to become more readily involved in school and other healthy activities. Students also have shown an increased willingness to trust, as our teachers become a constant and steady influence in their life. We have had students transfer to as many as 4-5 schools and homes in a one-year period, and the support and encouragement from their music teacher is sometimes the only stable factor in their unpredictable circumstances. We are encouraged to see what a real difference music can make to a child who has suffered unimaginable neglect and abuse.

Target demographics: Any child that is currently in the Texas foster care system.

Direct beneficiaries per year: 30-50 students

Geographic areas served: Texas

Programs: Provides to children in the foster care system private music instruction, and offers several different types of lessons based on the child's chosen area.

Kids in a New Groove is a great organization that was founded by great people!

In the past, youth in the Texas Foster Care System have lacked these types of service, but now Kids in a New Groove is making it possible! I do not know of other organizations that offer free music lessons to foster care youth, so when I heard about Kids in a New Groove I could not wait to be apart of such an inspiring organization.

Most children in foster care would never be able to experience these opportunities. Youth growing up in the foster care system might not ever have the opportunity to engage in music lessons with a qualified music teacher, but now that is an option made possible through Kids in a New Groove. This is a great program that can not only help boost their self-esteem, but introduce them to music. This program offers so much more than words can describe. I think this program can be therapeutic and can make a HUG difference in the lives of our foster youth. Everyone that I have spoken to loves the program and has nothing but positive things to say. Caseworkers have reported that youth that participate in this program often improve their behaviors and grades in school. This program reinforces positive behavior and I think can have great outcomes for the youth.

Let's continue to support this organization and help them grow so they can serve more youth in the foster care system!
