Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animals

Mission: Founded in 1983 by veterinarian Dr. Elliot M. Katz, IDA is a national, nonprofit organization with a distinguished record for its dedication to ending the exploitation and abuse of animals by defending their rights, welfare and habitat. IDA has fought tirelessly to elevate the status of animals beyond that of mere property and to educate the public that animals are individuals with needs and interests of their own, not mere commodities to be bought, sold, and discarded at an “owner’s” whim. IDA operates the Project Hope sanctuary in rural Mississippi as well as the Chimpanzee Rescue Sanctuary of Cameroon in Africa.  Committed to educating the public, working with grassroots groups and initiating litigation, research and investigations, IDA is on the cutting edge of animal protection.  Now, more than ever, IDA is a force for desperately needed change.

Programs: IDA's programs include campaigns to stop animal testing in both medical and product testing; a campaign to end the use of fur in fashion; a campaign to stop the use of animals in circuses; and miscellaneous programs focusing on the use of animals for food, clothing and entertainment. We sponsor national Fur Free Friday activities, the Primate Freedom Tour, and World Week for Animals in Labs Day.

There are two major "red flags" in the positive, 5 star reviews which suggest they are paid or company reviewers for IDA. First look at the dates they are posted. They are posted with the same two days in 2010. Then, look at the dates of the negative reviews, which I believe are actually legitimate. Secondly, the language of all the positive reviews is similar. They are well written, with no grammatical or spelling errors. Public reviews are simply never so homogeneous. Please consider giving to your local community animal groups instead.

I am an animal rights activist. I receive most of the information about cruelty to animals from IDA. They are definitely a top notch nonprofit organization. I can honestly say that they do a lot of good work for the rights of animals and to better animals' lives. They are definitely going to use the resouces they receive and put it to good use.

I am an animal-rights advocate and am involved in hands-on activism from time-to-time. I mostly enjoy getting the word out to help raise awareness about various issues of abuse and injustice. I became aware of IDA when Scotlund Haisley was appointed president. His impressive reputation as a friend of the animals - on the FRONTLINES with the Humane society - made this a perfect union. I look forward to learning more about IDA as I continue to witness what will surely be groundbreaking events to bring IDA in the forefront of the animal rights movement.

I have witnessed In Defense of Animals (IDA) create a lifeline for all animals in need, through rescue and progressive activism. I've handed out their publications and written letters for them for twenty years. I think of IDA as "the animal protection group that quietly dared to go where no other else has; they are able to create change without the fanfare and publicity other animal rights organizations do. (I have often thought that they do so in order for IDA's finances to be used only for necessities and the animals themselves.) With our changing landscape due to the internet and social networks, I see them truly coming in to their own. IDA is unique in its abilities, integrity, and remains a humble organization, one that I am proud to support.

Tell your story here and help others understand this charity This charity does amazing work. They work very hard to protect and save animals and have made great strides in animal rights. They have saved a lot of animals and will continue to do so. I support them, and I hope that more will continue to do so. The most recent I have seen are the monkey saved from lab testing. I strongly believe that these monkeys would have died in these labs had they not stepped in and taken them.

IDA is an amazing group of people dedicated to the plight of abused, misused, captive, and discarded animals everywhere. Their dedicated staff is easy to work with and they are always professional yet friendly and have the answers for the general public when asked. IDA is truly a professional, caring and respected animal rights organization.
