I love this place. Me and my family and our volunteers go to shelter every few weeks and have adult game and family night. The staff is so polite and the residents are the best. We received volunteer of the month. This a great place to come and spend time.
The staff went above and beyond allowing us to host a meeting for the men who stay there. They would make sure the library was set up for us and remind the guys who did want to go (but might have forgotten) that we were on site. The administration also supported us by finding new places to meet when the library had to be used for Swine Flu isolation. All-in-all, a great place, and the only place to offer comprehensive help to homeless men.
I am at Sulzbacher every Monday night helping to lead a men's group/Bible study. Needless to say the men there do not want to be living at a homeless center but they will tell you that it sure beats sleeping on the streets and going hungry. They get a place to stay, three meals a day and a helping hand to get be back on their feet. I have been involved with several of the men over the past year and I have seen a number them make the transiton out to a job and better living conditions. The ones that are still there are working on putting their lives back together, finding a job and starting over. I am thankful Sulzbacher is there to provide a safe harbor.
As a retired person I have chosen the I.M. Sulzbacher Center for the Homeless as my first choice among non-profits to support. I receive email updates from the Suzbacher Center letting me know of needed items, such as clothing, toiletries, etc. and my friends and I collect and deliver those items. I have served meals there and also helped with painting and sprucing up. I am very impressed with the overall atmosphere of the place. There is so much need and yet I always notice how the staff shows kindness, professionalism, respect, and and occasionally bring order into some very difficult situations. The Sulzbacher center feels safe to me. I never feel nervous about volunteering there. The food is good! No hungry person is turned away. Another thing I have noticed is that they know how to make use of whatever resources they have. There is no waste that I have been able to see. They really stretch the dollars there. I wish they had more funding and room to expand. The need is so great! I am thankful for The Sulzbacher Center.
We have been doing volunteer work for the Sulzbacher Center for nearly 3 years. The caring atmosphere encourages us to do all that we can to help those less fortunate. Our weekly pickup of Second Harvest food from participating Pizza Huts supplements meals provided by the center. By assisting with fund raising we feel that we are raising an awareness of how valuable their services are to our homeless community. To see the employees at the Sulzbacher Center interacting with the residents, stopping to say a kind word or just sharing a smile is truly heartwarming. I have never seen an employee too busy to stop and chat with a resident or address their needs. Our reward is just seeing the sparkle in the eye of an adult or child when we decorate a Christmas tree for them to enjoy. The Sulzbacher Center needs the support of our community so that no homeless family has to be turned away. The services they provide are unmatched by any other facility in the area!!
The work that the Sulzbacher Center provides for the Jacksonville homeless is truly amazing. Through their compassionate outreach to the less fortunate in our area many are helped. The joint efforts of the Sulzbacher team is truly inspirational.
About 2 years ago, I started looking for a place to volunteer, when I came across the Sulzbacher Center, and am I glad I did. I've been volunteering there now for over a year and a half, and the changes it has made in my life are huge. The Sulzbacher Center is a place that truly cares about its clients and the homeless community. Through their active case management and top notch facility, they are able to have a real and positive effect on the homeless condition. I have a great time and feel like I'm making a difference, no matter if I'm helping to prepare a meal to serve, painting the buildings, or lending advice.
