I have worked with Humanity First twice in disaster relief and several times with fundraisers. This organization does not have any paid employees and is entirely run by volunteers. Though the organization is smaller than many others, their impact is exponential. Following Hurricane Sandy, Humanity First relief efforts in the City of Long Beach, NY were inspiring. While organizations like Red Cross set up relief tents and established a central location to collect items, Humanity First went door-to-door to help residents clean their damaged homes and took much needed items to the residents rather than forcing them to go to the collection center. Following the deadly tornado in Moore, Oklahoma, I joined the efforts to help residents salvage their belongings from their homes. While many organizations stayed in air conditioned cars driving around offering water bottles, Humanity First was on the ground directly helping people collect their belongings from the piles of rubble that were once their homes. I cannot say enough good things about Humanity First, they are truly a unique organization.
I've volunteered with several non-profits in the Chicago area in a variety of fundraising support roles. Humanity First amazed me in its capability to organize, advertise and run large scale fundraising events with a very small amount of overhead. Nearly all of the donated funds (something like 92 or 93%) go to either established long-term programs or short-term relief operations. Additionally, the Director of Fundraising has an ability to both identify and execute on great ad hoc communications ideas to increase donations and participation in the major fundraising events such as the national walkathons.
