I started volunteering to give myself a break from job hunting. At first it was "all about me". After the first visit I realized that being jobless was not the most tragic thing in the world; that these poor sweet victims of cruelty and neglect had no family but the staff and thatthey all have so much love to give, if a human would just take a moment to see. The staff at HSGKC are some of the most loving and selfless people I have ever met. Everything they do is for the best interest of the animals in their care, even if it means getting up at 5:00 AM to go to the shelter so a dog could be picked up by his forever mom.
Our beloved L.T. was almost 17 when he died. My husband was overcome with grief. I searched Petfinder for another small dog. When I saw Maggie Mae, I knew that she was just what we needed. She was a 10 year old special needs dog whose owner was suffering from cancer. She had actually been brought to HSGKC for euthanasia. She was the perfect compainon to my disabled husband. After my husband died, I wanted to give back to the organization. Being useful to this team of dedicated individuals has helped me establish myself as a single person after 47 years of marriage. It is the highlight of my week to spend time helping them. My granddaughters volunteer with me during their summer vacation.
