This is an excellent nonprofit that serves the horse/animal population and the human population. I have donated money and horse supplies over the years . Cheryl and her large team of volunteers always do whatever it takes to save any animal from an bad situation. We also adopted a wonderful donkey from Save the Horses.
My husband and I met Cheryl Flanagan and learned about HRRRF when we were looking to rescue a donkey. What we discovered was a rescue of the first order. Cheryl makes sure that her rescues only go to good homes. If they need medical care and rehab, she keeps them until they are fit, and then looks for the perfect home. She will keep them forever rather than put them in the wrong environment. All animals are well fed and groomed. There are always lots of volunteers around taking care of all the animals. Also, Cheryl runs a wonderful program for children who have experienced trauma and benefit from time spent with animals. We were able to adopt a wonderful donkey that has become a much loved pet and companion for my horse. We donate to this rescue on a regular basis.
Back in January, I had four horses show up on my property. They belonged to someone who was leasing a nearby pasture and had abandoned them. They were skinny, fearful and HUNGRY! Not sure what to do, I contacted the Local Marshall's office, who oversees Animal Control. A Marshall came out, filed a report and contacted HRRRF (Save the Horses). Cheryl Flanagan was amazing. She and her rescue team showed up with trailers and helped me load four fearful horses with kindness and compassion. All four were eventually adopted and now have wonderful lives. I visited the Save the Horses facility and was overwhelmed by the number of animals, from donkeys and draft minis to potbelly pigs and goats, that Save the Horses shelters. Horses are the number one concern, but seeing the compassion for all animals shows the true spirit of rescue. I will one day soon be a Save the Horses foster, as I will never "buy" another horse. When my boys move on to the big pasture in the sky and my pastures and barn have room, Save the Horses will be my only call. Thank you Cheryl and your team for all you do. Stacey Finelli, Waleska GA
We have known Cheryl Flanagan and HRRRF since 1997. She helped us find our son's first horse, Snowflake. Later she provided a place for Pony Club to meet, for horse back riding lessons, clinics, and events.
As my son grew, we bought a neglected thoroughbred for $500 from a friend of ours. Our friend had found Mac at a horse auction and brought him home, knowing he didn't have any use for him but knowing that Mac needed a home.
Mac had done it all and proved to be a great schoolmaster for our son. We dearly loved him and he was a part of our family until Mac sadly had to be retired. When we reached that point we thought of Cheryl and HRRRF. We knew she would help us find a good home for Mac to happily spend the rest of his life. It was important to us to have a safe place for Mac to go to, where there would be no chance that he would be sold, abused, or neglected.
Since then we have been to the farm many times and donate as much as we can to support HRRRF. We love spending time at the farm. By spending time with Cheryl and the rest of the volunteers, you come away having learned about respect for life, patience and compassion. Cheryl has touched my life - and continues to touch everyone around her. Cheryl and the HRRRF volunteers make a difference in the lives of those who are fortunate enough to be in their care, in addition to the lives of the other volunteers, adopters, horse lovers, board members and friends.
There are not enough words to describe how much I admire and appreciate the remarkable work done at Save The Horses!! Cheryl Flanaghan and her staff work tirelessly to save the lives of horse, donkeys, goats, sheep, pigs, and the list goes on. They also offer riding lessons, horsemanship workshops, and have a very successful "Barn Buddy" Program that pairs foster/adopted children with rescued horses, teaching proper equine care and building confidence too. They see them bond together and flourish! I love every minute spent there.
What an amazing place with an awesome mission: to give love, compassion, hope, and purpose to neglected and hurting animals! When I went for my first visit, I never expected to see the vast array of animals being cared for at Save The Horses (Horse Rescue Relief and Retirement Fund Inc.). There were horses, donkeys, pigs, chickens, goats, and ducks. And all of them looked very happy and healthy because of the attention they have received from Cheryl Flanagan and her incredible team of volunteers. They take horses that are in desperate need of medical care and they restore their health by doing whatever it takes to bring that healing about. It is a wonderful place to visit and I'm so thankful that it is only a short drive from Woodstock!
I adopted the most beautiful pony from Horse Rescue Relief and Retirement Fund. They were absolutely wonderful to work with, paying special attention to the type of pony I was looking for, and personally showing and describing to me the ponies that would most suit what I was looking for (a quiet pony for my daughter, and a companion for my horse). The pony we decided on was exactly as they described. Because we didn't have much experience with introducing horses to one another they even took the time to ensure that our new arrival was introduced properly to our existing horse.
It's been over 7 years later that beautiful pony is still part of our family.
