Mission: Hands Across the Sea is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization dedicated to raising the literacy levels of Caribbean children by assisting schools and libraries in Eastern Caribbean communities
Direct beneficiaries per year: 25,000+ students at 100+ schools
Geographic areas served: Eastern Caribbean
Programs: Hands Across the Sea's Caribbean Literacy and School Support (CLASS) Program has shipped over 265,170 new amazing books to 422 primary and secondary schools and libraries on Antigua, St. Kitts and Nevis, Dominica, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Grenada, giving 74,000 children access to age-appropriate, culturally- appropriate top-quality reading material.
Hands Across the Sea's reach and delivery of quality books throughout the Eastern Caribbean islands makes it the most efficient charity of this type. 51,470 books and 95 boxes of resources to 100 schools, libraries, reading programs, and youth centers (approximately 17,000 students in 7 countries) were donated in 2011/2012. This supply of literacy materials makes a huge difference to Caribbean children with little or no access to books (beyond school texts). Living in Grenada, I can see the impact that this organization has made as expressed by librarians, reading groups and schools and can only thank the founders of Hands Across the Sea over and over again. Great work for a great cause that is often overlooked because it is not percieved as 'desperate' or urgent!
