I was very fortunate to work with Girls Inc of NYC as an AmeriCorps volunteer last year. I felt so lucky to work with a group of such committed staff, volunteers, and most of all... young women. I worked with two other AmeriCorps members to recruit more volunteers, and the new volunteers always said they were touched by the mission to encourage all girls to be strong, smart, and bold.
I always looked forward to engaging with the participants of the Girls Inc programs and seeing the projects they were working on. Whether it was building robots or choreographing dance routines, I was inspired by the creative freedom the girls were encouraged to use. It was evident that they felt empowered by the programs in which they participated. Even though I have completed my year of volunteer service with AmeriCorps, I still read up on new developments with Girls Inc of NYC, and I am constantly telling people about the great programs they offer.
I have been a volunteer for Girls Inc. for a year and a half and it is, by far, one of the best volunteer experiences! Their projects are great and you can see the difference they are making right in front of you. The girls I mentor really enjoy coming to their school on a Saturday morning to their sessions. That, right there, is worth bragging about!
Hi! Thanks for the great suggestion! We will look into some options for online forums for our volunteers. Will keep you posted!
The Girls Inc. of NYC motto is to be "Strong, Smart, and Bold."
Girls Inc. is a great opportunity for girls to apply themselves and learn hands on subjects and about themselves in a safe and friendly environment. They have the opportunity to connect and an outlet for creativity in art, music, science, and writing.
Girls Inc NYC is a truly inspiring organiztion. They use educational programs to shape the lives of the girls of NYC and help them achieve great things!
Girls Inc is an incredible organization. Being a girl these days has gotten better and worse, depending on how you look at it. With all of the negative messages girls receive on a daily basis from their peers and the media and the added pressures they face in an increasingly digital world, Girls Inc goes against the grain and encourages girls to be strong, smart, and bold. So simple, but so powerful. This organization is a voice of sanity in an insane world. Let's make the world a better place to be a GIRL!!!
I've only worked with Girls Inc for a short period but in that time there is no doubt in my mind that it's a great organization. They encourage the girls to be strong smart and bold and in some way encourage the mentors to be the same. It's been a great resource for me to get involved and help out in my spare time. The coordinators are great with placing mentors in mutually convenient school and think through every step so that mentors are never at a lost. They make it super easy so that you can focus on the subject at hand, the students.
The participating girls are so eager to be involved. They look forward to the Girls Inc workshops and are happy to be doing something productive and interactive. It's an all around great experience for everyone involved. I'd recommend both student and potential mentors to get involved!
Girls Inc has been a wonderful opportunity that I feel so grateful to be a part of. I volunteer as a mentor, and we go monthly to the same school, teaching lessons on empowerment to disadvantaged middle school girls. The staff is friendly, approachable, determined, and organized. The fellow mentors are incredible people who share a common belief. This has been the best volunteer experience of my life, and I've loved being a part of the organization!
I worked with Girls Inc in the summer of 2010 and it was a phenomenal experience. Their team was incredibly organized and energetic and motivated by the Girls Inc mission. They had a wonderful training program for volunteers and I felt that I got just as much out of the experience as I was able to provide for the students. I would absolutely volunteer with Girls Inc again if given the opportunity!
I had the wonderful opportunity to do a year of service with Girls Incorporated of New York City as a member of AmeriCorps. I was part of a three-person team that helped create and manage an official volunteer program, putting in place systems to recruit, train and place volunteers in Girls Inc of NYC programs. In this role, I helped provide a middle school after-school program with additional adult support for activities and homework tutoring. It was amazing to see how many people were drawn to Girls Inc's mission, and who were not only willing but eager to give their time to the girls.
I am honored to have been a part of such a positive, inspiring organization, working among people who dedicate their lives to female empowerment. Though I was not always intimately involved with direct service, I certainly was able to see what a positive impact the programs had on the girls. It was powerful to see young women who found new interests, new ways to express themselves, and built confidence in themselves.
Girls, Inc. is a wonderful organization that gives underserved girls the opportunity to express themselves and to learn of the inner strength that they possess. The girls are enthusiastic and participate in every aspect of the curriculum. The mentoring sessions serve as a safe environment where the girls can ask questions about anything and vent frustration regarding family and friends without fear of judgment. I am proud to be part of this organization and to help young girls realize their potential to be "strong, smart and bold."
Girls Inc of New York City is the type of organization that makes you smile knowing you're goig there; light up while there; and leave happy that you got to be apart of something so phenomenal.
I've had the sincere honor of volunteering with Girls Inc NYC for a few years now and I am so happy that I get to go back everytime. The staff is both smart and committed to the work. They work to ensure that not only are the girls strong, smart, and bold...but everyone that is involved is as well.
I volunteered with Girls Inc. last september and went every wednesday afternoon for the scholl year to work in Project Grow - an after-school program which is run by Girls Inc. I think Girls Inc. do a great job or providing an interesting and helpful program for young urban girls. They can take art, dance, photogaphy etc. classes and also get a good environment for them to do their homework and get help if they need it. I really enjoyed volunteering with them because the young girls are great and the tutors who ran the programs were all good with the girls so I learned a lot on how to relate to and handle girls of that age group. Also I did feel my volunteering was useful because as the girls got used to seeing me regularly, they would ask for help with their homework and projects and it's a pleasure to see them understand something better after I explain it to them. Some weeks I was sent to help a different group also, which I thought was good too as sometimes volunteer organisations can actually have too many volunteers but I felt that Project Grow is well run enough that they will send the volunteer to help where they are needed the most.
As a Girls Incorporated volunteer, I have had a very enjoyable experience working with students as well as with staff. Through helping the girls with test prep and homework, I've seen them show such enthusiasm and excitement for projects they're involved in, books they're reading for class or pleasure, and in other areas of their learning. When I inquire about their projects or current books, the girls respond with zeal, thoroughly explaining everything they've learned. This excitement for learning is a quality I wish I had in middle school and high school, so at times I am truly in awe of these amazing girls. This positivity I see the girls display when involved in school work is proof to me that Girls Incorporated is doing a wonderful job in providing meaningful and effective education, establishing trusting relationships, and encouraging the rejection of gender restrictions; the number of girls who have told me they like math and science is proof alone! I have had an awesome experience with Girls Incorporated – keep up the great work!
