Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animal-Related, Animal Services, Animals

Mission: German Shepherd Safe Haven, Inc. is a 501(c)3 Non-Profit Public Charity dedicated to finding loving forever homes for abandoned German Shepherds. Our main goal is to rescue, train, rehabilitate, and re-home German Shepherds from shelter environments and from owner surrenders. Our secondary goal is to provide education to the public on the temperament, personality, and life span of the breed, as well as the importance for owners to spay and neuter their dogs. We believe that matching each dog’s temperament and personality to a family’s needs is fundamental to creating life-long relationships where the dog is not just a dog, but a valued member of the family.

Programs: 2011 was our first full year of service. We adopted out 21 german shepherds. Other animals were pulled from shelters in southern california and placed in foster homes until they will be adopted.

GSSH is an amazing rescue organization! We are so fortunate to have heard of Tom and everything he and his volunteers do for these beautiful German Shepherds. We adopted our incredible Jenna a few years ago and she has been such a blessing to our home. We will be forever thankful and grateful to everyone at GSSH for making a dream come true for us.

I adopted from German Shepherd Safe Haven 5 years ago.

Tom gives each and every one of the rescues true dedication. The dogs welfare is always his top priority. He assures each dog is healthy and well trained prior to placing them in their forever homes.

My dog died a few months ago. Tom took the time to meet us at Sea Breeze Pet Cemetary to emotionally support me and my family and say his good byes to Carson.

Tom is always just a phone call away for anything....even after adoption.

I have never witnessed a rescue that puts as much time, dedication, and love as this rescue does.

You will be assured a true fit to your family if you adopt from this rescue.

We adopted our GSD from the German Shepherd Safe Haven. We were amazed by the amount of time and care that they put into the adoption process. They are truly committed to making sure that every adoption is a good fit for both the dog and the new parents.

While the dogs are being fostered, they are continually being trained to improve behavior. As a result, we took home a very well-behaved female GSD who, in spite of being a bit of a drama queen, has been a delight to have around our home.

In addition, Tom has always made himself available to help us during our transition into GSD parenthood. He has helped us with everything from food and treat choices to training suggestions.

We would highly, highly, recommend adopting from this rescue. They go above and beyond to make sure it is a smooth process and that the dogs and parents build a happy home together.

We adopted our beautiful female German Shepherd from this organization just over four years ago. I can always communicate with Tom to this day on any concerns or questions I have. This organization truly cares about placing the right dog with the the right family. They even have a yearly picnic for the forever families and volunteers, which shows tremendous non profit dedication. I would highly recommend if you are interested in adopting, to look no further.

We adopted our dog Cash from German Shepherd Safe Haven in February 2016. GSSH was willing to work with us for an adoption despite the fact that we live out of state and 500 miles away. It was a lengthy and thorough interview and application process. We greatly appreciated the time taken up front to check our veterinary and personal references, inspect our house and talk extensively about Cash's personality to insure we would be a good match. We drove the 500 miles to meet Cash with the understanding that he might not get along with our dog and we could potentially leave "empty handed." Thankfully Tom was patient in working through the dog introduction and everything worked out!

Eight months after the adoption we still feel very connected to GSSH through social media updates and know that we could call on the organization at any time for support. GSSH's commitment to each dog they serve is truly lifelong. They put each dog's well being first and take the time to find the right forever home. I very highly recommend this organization.

I found their website helpful and Tom was great to work with, honest, and truly cares about matching the right dog to the right family / person. He also is pretty active online with info about the dogs which is great and makes you feel connected throughout the adoption process and beyond.

You will have to go through an application and evaluation process which may include a home visit. All these steps were easily enough accomplished and show the dedication this group has to ensuring as best they can that all involved have a long term positive experience.

Our GSD Cash is sleeping on the couch next to me as I write this review. He is one of the best parts of every day and we could not be happier. We'll continue to support German Shepherd Safe Haven and highly recommend them to anyone in a good position to adopt.

I had such a great experience adapting my beautiful German Shepherd girl from Tom and Jen; founders of this amazing rescue. This organization is the only one that really cares for all dogs they rescue. They make sure that every dog gets proper care/ vet checkups, love and training before they are placed for adoption. They also make sure that every dog is adapted by perfect matching loving family. I always recommend GSSH to people interested in adopting German Shepherd. Thank you Tom and Jen!

German Shepherd Safe Haven is the greatest organization. I highly recommend them to everyone who wants to adopt wonderful, loyal dogs. When I lost my last German Shepherd, I decided to get a rescue dog. I talked to other rescue organizations but I didn't feel comfortable. One day searching Internet, I found this beautiful girl. When I read the story about her, as well as the history and the mission of GSSH, I knew I found my perfect dog and a wonderful organization. Tom, Jen and their team are incredibly dedicated to their dogs. They take ample time with potential families to make sure every dog will fit perfectly.... And trust me.... They will! They also encourage fostering before adopting. Wonderful organization with so many happy dogs. I can't say enough positive things about them!!!

I believe I reviewed German Shepherd Safe Haven after adopting Jax (aka Roman) nearly two years ago. The relationship with Tom and the rescue was stellar at the beginning, and continues to be extremely positive nearly two years in. Paramount to us was that the rescue was as involved with us and our newest family member now as it was at the start, thus we never felt as if Tom or Jen were trying to place the dogs into just any home, then go about their business without any regard for how we're all faring. Not only did we get matched with the perfect dog for us, but we feel an integral part of the Safe Haven family. And, really, the annual picnic with adopters and adoptees, certainly makes you feel good when the Safe Haven volunteers remember each dog. It's as if these dogs have an extended family who will be mindful of their welfare throughout their lives.

I'm fairly familiar with German shepherd rescues, both locally and in the Southeast, where I've adopted dogs. I like to think of Safe Haven as a boutique rescue because Tom and Jen keep the dogs either in their homes or in fosters. The dogs never languish in a kennel atmosphere. To me, that makes them immediately available to acclimate to a new home without some of the issues that could arise from being boarded or kept in a kennel.
After we lost our adored GSD, Dexter, at barely five years old to cancer, we knew it wouldn't be long before we had to give our other dog, Luke, another playmate and, really, the house was simply too boring with only one mature, low-energy dog. We needed a playmate, too, since Dexter kept us amused pretty much around the clock.
We had signed up with a much larger rescue in SoCal, and while there was nothing wrong with it, we didn't get the personal attention we received from Tom. And because we already had Luke, they wanted us to add a female, but we didn't want to limit ourselves when we were happy with two males. They were pretty insistent. And, let's face it, adding a dog is really adding to the family, so it's important to get it right. Well, we hit pay dirt with German Shepherd Safe Haven, Tom and Roman (now Jax). Tom is wonderfully hands on, and doesn't disappear once the adoption is completed. Also, the organization offers the most wonderful annual event in its picnic where dogs, volunteers and adopted parents get to mingle and enjoy a day filled with food, games and happy German shepherds.
After an extended interview, Tom knew what we needed, and matched us up with the ideal dog. The only one we saw. But, until the paperwork was done, and Jax was in our home for just a few hours, none of us dreamed that something magical and nearly impossible to believe had transpired.
It's fairly rare that a rescue dog is accompanied by a pedigree. Jax had one, and Tom asked if I wanted it included in his paperwork. I did want to see it because I was interested in doing a little research, and seeing Jax's family. That's when the magic happened.
You see, we got Dexter in the Atlanta area when we lived there. He came from a small kennel in Germany that raised German showlines. On our first evening with Jax, I decided to take a look at his pedigree and was absolutely floored to find that Jax and Dexter were related, and fairly closely. I checked Dexter's papers and verified that Jax's grandmother and Dexter's grandfather were littermates from that small kennel in Germany. What are the odds? We still find it nearly unbelievable. We're beyond thrilled to have Jax because he's ridiculously silly and loving. And, on another level, we still have a piece of Dexter. Truthfully, even without the Dexter connection, Jax is the ideal family member. We're so grateful to Safe Haven, and when the time comes for another GSD, we'll gladly look there first.

GSSH is wonderful. Here's my story . . . Last summer (2015), my husband and I decided we were finally in the perfect position to create a loving home for a dog. We were ready to adopt. German Shepherds are my favorite dog, but my husband didn't have a preference. In fact, he had never owned a dog. I contacted another agency, which I won't name here. Our application was cleared, we passed the house inspection, and were set to meet the dog we had chosen. We were told she was available and ready for a forever home. I'm not sure what really happened, but we were told the person who was fostering her wasn't ready to give her up. I was so disappointed. I didn't understand why they had her picture on the website if she wasn't available. I thought fostering was temporary. After that, we contacted another agency, but they never responded. While I was waiting to meet the dog from the first agency, German Shepherd Safe Haven contacted me about a GSD named Ginger, but I let them know I was in line for another GSD. When I contacted GSSH about Ginger after our dreadful experience, I was happy she was still available. Our experience with GSSH was very professional and I can tell they really loved their dogs and wanted the very best for them. Ginger (1 1/2 year old) was timid at first, but we were given great instructions to allow her to make a smooth transition into our home. Everything was straight forward, which I truly appreciate. The adoption was finalized Aug 2015. I will always be grateful to GSSH. Scout (formally named Ginger) is the perfect dog for us and we are the perfect humans for her. Thank you so much for giving us a chance, Tom!!

We have adopted two German Shepherds from GSSH over the last three years. I have never met an organization that has been so dedicated to finding the perfect home for these animals. Before we could adopt them we were checked out and our home to make sure it was a safe place for them. They came to us healthy and trained. Also if we have any questions they are always there for us. I give GSSH an A++ rating. Val Block

I adopted my shepherd, Toby, from German Shepherd Safe Haven a few years ago. I could not have been happier with the experience. Tom really takes time getting the dogs ready for their forever homes. Toby came into my home and it was instantly as if he'd always been with us.

There are six rescues in southern California specializing in german shepherds. This is why you should choose German Shepherd Safe Haven - their one and only concern is for the dog. That means that Tom and Jen personally know each dog, its needs and quirks, and even behavior issues. They always look for the best home for their dogs and do not place a dog in a home unless they are confident it is right for the dog. While there can never be a guarantee with a rescue dog, if you are lucky enough to become part of the Safe Haven family, you won't regret it.

On a personal note, thank you again, Tom and Jen, for allowing Toby to become part of our family.

I can not say enough wonderful things about Tom and German Shepherd Safe Haven. We adopted Reba after seeing her on the website. The process was thorough yet straightforward, nothing we couldn't handle.
When we were having a couple of issues with Reba's behavior, Tom was at our house within 20 minutes, giving us advice and training.
Tom takes his work very seriously yet he so enjoys what he does! Reba is always super excited to see him and our family knows we can always count on him if we need anything else regarding our lovebug Reba!

German Shepherd Safe Haven is amazing! After several years of watching the wonderful way Tom and all the staff and volunteers work with the dogs they rescue I knew that if I ever wanted to adopt another shepherd it would get one through GSSH. After losing both of my shepherd with in a short time I was obviously devastated. I had rescued a little Yorkie and was concerned about bring another big dog in to my little family. But I knew I had to have another shepherd. I had several conversations with Tom about one dog in particular that he had rescued and I knew I needed her as much as she need me. I had total confidence in knowing even though I live more than 500 miles away that adopting Kala (Kalani) was right. I knew she was provided training and was a well adjusted, healthy young dog. The arrangement was made for Tom to meet me while I was visiting my son in Vegas to finalize the adoption. Even after returning to Reno with Kalani (now named Kala) I knew I still had help from Tom. He is always available to answer questions and give support. Kala has been with me and Tink the Yorkie for two years now and we couldn't be happier. She has become an amazing protector for Tink and a sweet and loving companion for both of us and I know this has a lot to do with the help and guidance she got from Tom and the fosters and volunteers at GSSH.
Thank you to all at GSSH

Thanks to German Shepherd Safe Haven, our dog Avery was rescued from a high kill shelter and placed in our home to complete our family. She is one of the best things that has happened to us, and after we had a baby, she has not left our daughter's side. Not only did we gain a dog, but we also gained an extended family, GSSH. You can always count on the organization for support, advice, or even just a great friendship since we all have one thing in common, our beautiful Shepherds! The organization is 100% dedicated to these dogs, their lives, and finding the perfect family to rid them of their unfortunate past. There is no greater satisfaction than to see these wonderful, intelligent dogs living up to their full potential and providing love and companionship to their families. GSSH gives them the opportunity to do that!

The founders of German Shepherd Safe Haven (GSSH) go through great lengths to make sure that the dog you adopt is going to be a wonderful family member for you and your family. After being assessed at the shelter it is pulled from, the dog undergoes a health assessment by a veterinarian, is temperament evaluated to determine the personality type and what home would be best. In addition, the dog is trained in basic commands. This organization takes the time to vet the dog that you adopt and conveys all information about the dog so you know the personality type dog you are adopting. I find this organization to be more small and 'family-like' as the founders have a once a year alumni picnic inviting dogs and owners to gather and catch up on the new life that the dogs have with their new families. GSSH takes the time to make sure that your new family member is a good fit as adoption is for life.

German Shepherd Safe Haven is a top notch animal rescue. From their selection of dogs to adopt out to their selection of adopters for the dogs, they do their due diligence to make sure it works for both parties. They truly have the best interest of the dogs at heart, with follow up even after the adoption process is complete. All of their rescue dogs are kept in homes prior to adoptions. They do a terrific job!

We have had the best experience with Tom and Jen. I found them because I was looking for someone to board our GS. Not only did they treat our dog like their family but our dog actually came home missing his other dog friends. That's when we knew we needed a second dog. Tom suggested a female they had rescued. She is amazing. The process was so easy. We fostered her for a little while and they we adopted her. The donation to adopt her were so reasonable and now I would pay anything to help them rescue more dogs like her. German Shepard Safe Haven deserves all the help in the world. The work they are doing matters. These are dogs who have been abused and need love. Our life would not be complete without the dog we adopted from them. Please help in any way you can. I plan to continue to suppport GSSH

I wish I could give more than five stars to German Shepherd Safe Haven. I have been around dogs my whole life and never seen an organization like GSSH and the care they give to not only the shepherds but also to the foster homes as well as the permanent homes these dogs go to. Tom and Jen not only find the perfect home for the shepherds but take the time to make sure the family is happy as well. As an adoptive dog owner from GSSH, I have had the opportunity to call anytime I needed advise about something or just wanted to thank them for the most perfect dog anyone could ever love. Aiden has been a gift from God for us. He has helped me get through a very hard time in my life when I lost my father. The human animal bond was never stronger as it was during this time. Aiden knows my feelings without me saying a thing. He is incredible.
I would recommend GSSH to anyone who wants the perfect companion for life. It will be a process to adopt your new baby, but you and your new dog will be forever grateful.

We were looking to adopt a rescue dog after losing our loving Lab after 13 years. We met German Shepherd Safe Haven on the Internet and read the story about their history and were really intrigued about their mission. After contacting them we found a group of volunteers that are willing to work with people to find a perfect match between the rescued dog and adoption family. We met the perfect dog, completed the adoption process and now have the best new family member.

We adopted a beautiful German Shepherd from GSSH 3 years ago that has become a great love of our lives. GSSH has been a supportive organization by introducing us to other forever families and providing information to keep our new family member healthy and happy. We highly recommend GSSH to those who are looking for a German Shepherd because they do a great job to make sure that the adoption is a good match for both the dog and family.
