I can’t imagine how much harder our journey would have been without FLC. They have been our go to source of info and help.
The Fundamental Learning Center Inc. is a phenomenal resource and support for parents and teachers of dyslexic students who are in the homeschool/private/public education system. It has helped us find our way to teach our daughter learn how to read. This organization is non-profit so they are here to help!
I was trained at FLC to teach her Alphabetic Phonics, an Orton-Gillingham method, so we can homeschool our daughter. But after a year, we decided it was worthwhile to send her to Rolph Literacy Academy, a school for dyslexic students (5-9 yrs). It has only been 8 weeks and we have noticed our daughter blossom; from being afraid to go to school to being excited for school. She now runs toward the school doors and can tell me everything about her day.
As a parent, the staff at FLC continue to teach me many things about overcoming challenges that come with dysleixa.
The FLC is the only place in Wichita where you will find a school (RLA) for children, training center, resource center, and support group for parents of dyslexic children.
FLC and Rolph Literacy Academy have been a blessing to our family. Not only have they helped to educate me about dyslexia, they've helped to teach my dyslexic son to read. The facility is full of friendly and knowledgeable staff that are willing and excited to help us through our journey. We are forever grateful for this facility and I'm not sure where we'd be without it. I have recommended this facility to many who have children or family members who have shown struggles with reading.
Two years ago we found out that my son has Dyslexia. We are very lucky to live in Wichita with the Fundamental Learning Center as they have made our lives better. We started by taking parent education classes so that we could help our son to learn and quickly transitioned to having him attend the school there. They have changed his life and ours for the better by making a difficult situation easy. We will continue to use and support FLC long after my son stops attending their school as we have learned what a valuable service they provide to the community without most ever knowing about them.
When I discovered Fundamental Learning Center, I had no idea two of my four children had dyslexia. I only knew they struggled with reading. Since having my kids assessed at FLC, major changes have occurred in both of their lives. My son heard for the first time in his life that he was intelligent while meeting with the in-house licensed psychologist. Because of his dyslexia diagnosis, he was able to get accommodations in school, and now for the first time he has all As and Bs. My daughter is going through a tutoring program that is improving her spelling and reading fluency. Life-changing is an understatement. The staff has gone out of their way to help us with navigate school with dyslexia. The people at FLC are truly there to help kids learn. For my family, FLC has been the answer to our prayers.
I was feeling discouraged, isolated and lost with my sons reading issues. I knew, in my core that he was dyslexic but no one believed me or thought it was too much of an issue. Dyslexia became either a "bad" word or if he was, it wasn't a big deal.
Then we walked into FLC and our lives have changed forever! The entire staff are loving, attentive and supportive people who truly care for all children. They stand by you every step of the way. My son has thrived since his assessment, summer reading camps, alphabetic phonics and being surrounded by people who understand his "super power."
I will forever be greatful to FLC! They truly are doing amazing things in our community.
FLC was amazing. Our son was showing signs for years that he struggled in school. His teacher referred us to FLC and we tested him. He is dyslexic and is now getting the help he needs to learn and grow. We would never have guessed or known how to help him on our own. We are so grateful for FLC!!!
FLC has been instrumental in helping my daughter with dyslexia. Both their teacher training program and their full-day school are exceptional. They are professional, knowledgeable, and always go above and beyond. I don’t know what we would have done without them!
A mother usually knows. In our case, my intuition that my son's subtle reading issues resulted in a trip to FLC. We live in a rural area, our school wanted to be helpful. Yet, like many districts, we had to follow a protocol. Fearful our 8 yr old would be discouraged by the long wait, we made an appointment. A good friend recommended FLC. We had an appointment a week later. We had an answer in 2 hours. And support immediately. If we had waited, we would have waited over two months and the State of KS doesn't even evaluate for dyslexia. So we would have been desperately behind. It was a gift to find out so quickly and a few weeks later my son loved school again!
FLC came to my daughter and I at exactly the right time! This place, and all its employees, have gone above and beyond to assist me in helping my daughter navigate through dyslexia. Regardless of how big or how small my questions have been, they are always there to offer guidance and support! And it goes beyond the academics...these women have become my extended family; offering emotional support, as well, when some days the challenges seem to weigh me (as a parent) down! I have seen the Alphabetic Phonics work in my own daughter, and I have had the privilege of teaching other students, as well...IT WORKS! It is not your every day phonics program, and the women of FLC are not your every day teachers. They are truly incredible!! I would highly recommend FLC to anyone whose child is struggling with reading!
The programming for teachers and students alike is science-based and provided in an enriching and fun environment. I don't know what we'd have done with FLC and it's staff.
They know their stuff! Our son was identified by his 2nd grade teacher as possibly being dyslexic. She suggested we have our son tested at the Fundamental Learning Center to confirm/deny her suspicions. He was tested by Dr. Brian Stone at the Center. He was found to be severly dyslexic and dysgraphic. Dr. Stone's report, though, was a true turning point for our child's self-esteem. Dr. Stone identified our son's learning differences but he also identified the brilliant spacial awareness and problem-solving skills our son posesses (these traits aren't measured on standardized testing.) We feel so fortunate that our son's teacher was trained to identify dyslexia after taking classes at the Center. I can't imagine where he would be now self-esteem-wise and academically if we would have continued down the traditional learning road. Our son has benefitted from summer sessions with the Center (he refers to it as the "Fun Center" because he had such a great experience at the Center) and several years of after-school help by tutors trained through the Center. We've also taken advantage of seminars such as the "Dyslexic Techies" series which helped to make us aware of technological helps for dyslexic students. Our son is now a 7th grader with nearly all A's in a traditional school setting. I want to stress the critical roll the Center has played in our son's academic success and improved self-esteem. Thank you.
Fundamental Learning Center is a wonderful resource in Wichita for children who have dyslexia. They have helped my son since the 3rd grade and he is doing wonderfully in his school, now 6th grade.
Awesome organization. My wife and boys have been extremely blessed by Fundamental Learning Center. Gang -- Keep up the great that you've begun.
FLC is the ONLY place in south central Kansas that provides comprehensive evaluation & then research based, proven interventions for people with the common learning difference dyslexia. I am so glad they're here to serve this community and state, because there is a huge lack statewide of these services.
I am working in my fifth year as an Academic Language Therapist overseas. FLC changed my life! It not only equipped me to help my own children, but to help other students and parents who have limited resources in an international setting. Thank you for the hands on, practical training, modeling and resources that have in turn helped many children learn to love to read!
I grew up in Wichita, but now live overseas and work in an International school. Last year I took a teacher training course and applied all I learned to my three children plus seven others. This summer I came back to Wichita to continue my training and I learned so much!
Because of the training I have received at Fundamental Learning Center, I am the dyslexia expert in the country I live. The classes I have taken at FLC have not only impacted our family, but the way people view this learning difference in our host culture. The gift of helping kids reach their potential keeps on giving. Thank you for touching countless lives!
Just completed my training at Fundamental Learning Center. What a wonderful facility! Stop what you are doing and take any class you can here!
The Fundamental Learning Center is an amazing facility and an invaluable asset to Wichita and the surrounding communities. After completing the introductory Alphabetic Phonics course I feel powerful, armed with resources and knowledge to help my son who is both dyslexic and dysgraphic. I am excited to continue my education with instructors and staff who have a wealth of experience and a passion for helping kids (and their parents) succeed!
My daughter began school at the Right Literacy Academy at the Fundamental Learning Center last summer. She has grown in amazing ways. Before she went she could barely read any words at all and was very frustrated and disappointed in herself. Now she can read a lot and has so much self confidence that it is a complete change. She goes to school every day eagerly and excited to learn. The environment at her school is just amazing. The teachers are kind and thoughtful and teach to the kids abilities and talents, in addition to helping them with what they struggle with, which is generally reading, math, spelling and other things that are language- related. Before finding the Fundamental Learning Center, my daughter was constantly frustrated and disappointed and had very low self- esteem. Now she has done a complete 180. She is happy, excited, and loves to learn. She loves math and is good at reading at her level. She has made friends that are peers that understand her struggles and vice versa. It is the very best learning environment possible for my child, & I am ever grateful to have found them. in addition, they also offer free parent classes to educate parents about their child's disorder and how to help and support and advocate for them. They also teach teachers how to teach children with dyslexia, which only improves our city's ability to help these children to learn. They are creating a web of people who are supportive and understand the disability and gift that dyslexia brings to all children and how these children are special and will change the world.
Absolutely amazing. Fundamental knows its stuff and the instructors and staff truly care. I would recommend anyone concerned about their child's school performance, particularly in reading, to bring their child in for an assessment. If you have means to, attend their classes too - you will learn how to help your kid!
