Two brothers take on the ultimate test of endurance and self-accomplishment to raise awareness and help put a stop to sex slavery in Nepal where every year 15,000 women and children are trafficked and forced into the trade. Here's how you can help:
For quite a few years my younger brother has struggled with drug abuse; it has been an arduous uphill battle to overcome this for him. As he'd find himself in familiar surroundings, he would fall back into self-destructive patterns.
To help break that cycle I decided to help and so have arranged an expedition for my brother and myself to complete the Himalayan Manaslu trek this August, a trip I am fully funding myself for both of us.
This is a 2 ½ week trek averaging altitudes of between 3,500m to 4,500m and a pass reaching 5,200m. The idea being to surpass our own expectations and limitations, and come out with confidence that so much more is possible than we thought coming in.
Addiction is a constant battle for many of us, and this is not only a mental, but also physical challenge, for which I quit smoking after 15 years, and Floriaan is partaking in a three-month fitness program in order to attempt this trek.
Being myself in a position to give freely, the wish to pay that forward immediately became very strong for my brother. And so following the concept of "Paying it forward” we therefore decided to use this trip to raise awareness and funds for a local NGO in Nepal, visit one of their projects on the ground when there, and see firsthand the power of helping.
The NGO he chose is Maiti Nepal. This organisation works towards the rehabilitation and reintegration of women that have been trafficked, or forced into sex labour. The goal of Maiti Nepal is to prevent, advocate for justice in cases of rescued women and girls, and ensure effective and immediate action is taken towards their traffickers.
I should add that this is coming together across large distances. I, Michail, live in Sydney, Australia. Floriaan lives in Basel, Switzerland. We will be seeing each other for the 2nd time in 5 years. By doing this trek we hope to raise 10k + for Maiti Nepal with 100% of donations going straight to the charity. We appreciate your support and are excited to share the outcome of our journey with you.
